Monitor and Merrimac Buttes are two striking sandstone formations located near the entrance of Canyonlands National Park, named after Civil War ironclad ships. These towering buttes rise dramatically from the desert floor, offering stunning views of the surrounding terrain. The area is popular for hiking, mountain biking, and off-roading. Civil War reenactment at The Wade House in Plymouth, Wisconsin. This is a huge, annual event that draws visitors from across the country. These images were taken in 2005, during which time I worked as a photojournalist for a local newspaper.
