I pursue artistic photography and client shoots, organise workshops, events and exhibitions, all centered around analouge photography. Why analogue?
I have always been an analogue photographer at heart, maybe only since 1987 when I started taking pictures in black & white! Alongside my self-taught development, I attended an A-Level photography class at the Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education in the mid nineties. Since then the materials I have used have become more varied: video, 13x18cm view camera, Ilfochrome, Polaroid and slides. Concerning artistic projects I am more and more convinced that digital imagening is beautiful & fast, but actually needs a new name of its own, because photo=light/graphy=etching is no longer that!
While in photography the picture is irrevocably ‘in the box’ when you press the shutter release, this is the moment the work begins when taking digital pictures! Not only for the photographer, who uses all sorts of tricks to create images that in pre-digital times were reserved for a few professional studios with connected specialised labs, but also for the camera electronics that recalculate visual impressions in a form that is expected/desired by the majority of viewers. In recent years, however, I have become increasingly aware of the arbitrariness and reproducibility of these images.
In order to achieve the speedy workflow that is sometimes necessary, I do not exclude myself from digital technology. Since 2008 I have also been very happy to photograph with digital full frame NIKONs and cameras that use FOVEON sensor chips, which to my opinion reproduce the well-known film process digitally and bring the most honest results... But everything in life is subjective. I would be delighted if you take a look around this page and (re)acquire a taste for analogue photography.
