Hello, You
Thank you for stopping by.

Maggie Chow
Maggie Chow is a visual artist and educator. A first-generation settler of Chinese heritage. She nestled in the late 80s in Vancouver, the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She now lives in South Okanagan on traditional territories, the Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation.
Her works link to the cycle of life in the environment with the inspiration of nature’s leftovers. Impermanence, change and resiliance play a large part in the process of thinking and making of her work. Her recent works are reflected in her paintings, as well as the memories of her childhood, lived experiences, and traditional approaches to Chinese calligraphy. She seeks to transform calligraphy practice into freedom as a therapeutic experience to heal the body and mind. She intends to captivate the energy of mindfulness between the brush strokes to bring a new dimension to view from east to west with a contemporary context.
Maggie is also an experienced Early Years Art Consultant and Artist Residence in schools. Her educational approach is rooted in Reggio Emilia's Approach, Design Thinking, Project Zero, Experiential Learning, Forest Bathing, Expressive Art and Regenerative art practice. Paintings Stories
Every Day Is A Good Day
This series of works explores resilience through form, light, and language. The organic shapes are painted with special pigments that shimmer in sunlight, subtly shifting as the light changes. These radiant surfaces suggest quiet strength and vitality, while the surrounding negative space embodies a continuous, flowing energy. This ever-present force echoes the daily balance we maintain in life.
Woven through this piece is asemic writing: marks that resemble language but speak in mystery. Without knowing the symbols, we cannot read- but perhaps we can feel. All language begins this way: as an abstract form, later agreed upon. Without that agreement, words become art, sound becomes texture, and writing becomes a dance of intention and intuition. Here, meaning is constructed through context and shared understanding. Without that, even structured writing becomes an abstract form. This piece invites you not to decode, but to dwell in the spaces between sense and sensation, between silence and sparkle, where even the unspoken words can shine.
Wish You Good Luck
My first experience with Chinese calligraphy began in childhood, guided by my father. Long before I understood the meaning of the characters, I love the mark making play. The brush moved like a body in motion each stroke carrying rhythm, breath, and energy. When I write the character, I lived in the gesture before I understanding in the meaning.
Over time, my lived experiences and understanding the complexity meaning of the characters deepened my relationship with it mean. Writing for me became a way of listening. Each mark holds intention, memory, and lived experience.
Wish You Good Luck series is a meditation on this relationship. The characters in this series are drawn from traditional expressions of well-being and prosperity; often used in meditation or shared during Chinese New Year as wishes for good fortune. Each marks serves as a quiet anchor: a symbol of renewal, grounding, and cyclical return.
The strokes in these works are intentionally reconstructed. Influenced by the meaning of the original character. I allow my gestures to shift, loosen, and respond to the meaning. Through this process, the characters become both familiar and transformed, carrying inherited meaning alongside personal interpretation.
As I paint, I am reminded of the natural world: the shadows of tree branches, grass moving in wind, water rippling outward. These marks echo nature’s rhythms, responsive, relational, and alive. The act of marks making becomes a dialogue between body, brush, and present.
In cursive calligraphy, in particular, captures this state of flow. It holds energy rather than form, essence rather than precision. The practice is therapeutic an honest act between movement and meaning. These works are offered as gestures of care. It is my hope that they carry the same sense of joy, balance, and quiet vitality that emerged in the making.
The intents size for this series are large scale and I am welcoming on commission.
