This first paragraph was an unnecessarily powerful hook for a game that's not worth your engagement. But in the end, I can't help but think that this game, more than any other game that threw gameplay out of the window in favour of trending Hollywood actors, has to be used as an example of what not to do with a video game. Even though The Walking Dead used the same process, Telltale did it better. Even Kojima managed to make a better game with Death Stranding. But this is a blockbuster production, sold as a AAA, from a studio known for doing this over and over, and the result is a boring mess that should've made David Cage finally experiment with the medium he's been parasiting, but nope, he doubled down with Detroit (which is admittedly better) later on.
The game starts with the reveal of a young woman, Jodie, who's able to take down an entire SWAT team with her mind. We then get to "play" with her as a child, making Jodie walk through hallways before scientists prepare her for an experiment. As the players, all we gotta do is choose between options that really don't do anything: Answer "yes", or shrug. That'll be a recurring theme throughout this game. Then, we get to control a free-flying cam to look through the walls. Which honestly is a pretty solid start, all David Cage things considered. But right then, of course, we go back to what makes the average storytelling game a chore to play: Outcomes being forced against the player's will. Turns out Jodie cannot control her power and neither can you. If you could, there would be no game, so the devs simply had to intervene and ruin the illusion of choice... ten minutes into the game.
Next scene, you're a young adult in an embassy now. And your dialogues just got upgraded from two choices to four! And by choices, I mean words that summarize the long-winded phrase Jodie is going to recite. Funnily enough, they're the exact same kind of choices Fallout 4 gave us two years later. The difference is that FO4, the combat-heavy game, was hated for its dialogue until mods fixed it. But Beyond: Two Souls, the story-dependent game, wasn't. It honestly makes no sense to me. Especially since that four-way choice was another illusion in the end; you had to pick two of those lines. Yup, Fallout handled dialogue better. You once again play as Aiden (the aforementioned power / "free-flying camera") to do some spy stunt and recover documents. Once you got them... Chapter done. Pretty sure even Goldeneye speedrunners would finish most levels in more time than in took me to play through this Embassy stage, but okay. At least this time I was able to mind control, and do even more QTEs.
Next chapter and oh boy it's another timey-wimey game. When I beat this game back in 2013, I already found that concept of spamming flashbacks and flash-forwards boring and tired. But now the year is 2025, I just went through Mouthwashing, so this nonsense is even more grating. Anyway, we're 15 years old now. You're going to a party you don't wanna go to, where even the music choice is dictated by NPCs. It's really a teenage birthday party as seen through the lens of 50-year-olds; smuggling beer, dancing with explicit moves to quiet pop music, watching NFL, everybody being a horny asshole... and messing with people who have superpowers because they weren't coded to have an IQ. When you take revenge on them, half will say "we're not scared of you" and the other will shout "the fuck was that??"
That's only the first part of the game. If you could endure this half-hour of content, congratulations: here are 7-9 more hours to slog through. During which you join the CIA and take part in the most boring obstacle course ever, or shoot at stuff but you barely get to move or aim by yourself... Of course Control looks like a timeless masterpiece when this shit was the previous "AAA game about a female CIA agent with paranormal stuff"! Everything gets a glow up when put next to a turd. Jodie even gives us a hilarious "are we the baddies?" moment later on... Ma'am, you're CIA, a brutal and ruthless agency from the only country to ever drop nukes. What do you think.
And of course, there's the infamous elephant in the room: Some of the QTE sections are 100% useless, much like the dialogue. You can go through some fights by putting your controller down, and it won't affect anything. And when you do play these sections, not only the required movements are often confusing and unrealistic, but then when you fail, the screen flashes red... but it still shows Jodie landing a clean hit, so you can barely tell if you did it right or not.
This is really not how to make a game, and not how to make a movie. Beyond an insult to video games, this is a waste of budget, resources and cast. This is the power fantasy of an out-of-touch celebrity developer, who does whatever because he can. The gameplay here is barely existent and when it does, it's plain and it doesn't matter. The story is nothing we haven't seen before, and the choices are the same thing Mass Effect 3 was criticised for; different colors for what's essentially the same flavor, regardless of what you decide. The NPCs are ridiculously terrible, with atrocious writing and idle lines that make Oblivion's townsfolk look like their scripts are powered by ChatGPT. The audio is nothing remarkable, same for the graphics.
Nothing about this game is redeemable, aside from the fact that... hopefully, it kept the devteam fed. But ultimately, it's just a graphic book with not enough content, a nice-looking shell with famous names written all over, but no life within it. And twelve years later, right now... This trend is still strong but at the very least it's refined now, it's palatable. Story-driven games are everywhere, especially in the indie market, but they're done with more passion for this medium than Quantic ever dreamed of. And do I think it's still a problem to throw gameplay out of the window? Yes, I do and I always will. But I'll respect a well-written story when I see one, while wishing novels and poems using video gaming as a platform would use video gaming elements. More and more story-driven games do that, and it's a good thing. But we have
