Forest of lava trees resulting from eruption of a 1-km-line of vents east of Pu'u Kahaulea on Hawai'i Island's Kilauea Volcano. The bulbous top of each lava tree marks the high stand of the lava flow as it spread through the trees. As the fissure eruption waned, the flow continued to spread laterally; its surface subsided, leaving pillars of lava that had chilled against tree trunks. Spattering is from fissure out of view to the left. Note blob of spatter adhering to the top of the stripped 'ohi'a tree.

Ice covering Beaufort Sea near the Arctic Ocean typically reaches full-blown breakup by late May each year as air and water temperatures warm, and as daylight turns longer. But 2016 has been dramatically different.

This year, significant breakup and fracturing of the sea ice had occurred by mid-April, as seen in these Landsat 8 images acquired almost exactly a year apart. On April 13, 2015, the ice is largely intact, though fracturing has begun. A year later, on April 15, 2016, much more open water is visible.

After an hour of hiking, we set up our cameras at 2500m. Although we had expected to see the moon rise right above the mountains, clouds on the horizon delayed when we got our first glimpse of red light. This was my first lunar eclipse photography session and I am afraid I may have been too enthusiastic about the photography. Next time, I’ll focus more on the actual experience. Until then, the result of 90 stacked RAW files taken at around 23h35 CET will have to suffice! Note the faint stars from the original stacked file that show that even at high ISO, modern CMOS sensors have great DR!
