Welcome to the Adult Keelboat sailing program at PCYC. Be ready to enjoy the rush of water and the feel of the wind in the sails. There's a completely different world out there to challenge and enjoy.
Please check your registration for dates of your course. Weekends run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekdays are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

What to expect

Weather:
While the course is usually completed in moderate conditions, be prepared for rain or shine, and dress accordingly. When the wind blows, the temperature on the lake is often 10 degrees cooler. It is best to be prepared with extra layers, and extra dry clothing.
Do not forget water, sunblock, sunglasses and a hat. There is plenty of room aboard to store all your food and gear. On weekend courses, bring lunch, so we can remain on the lake longer.

START KEELBOAT SAILING - what you learn
OBJECTIVES: (Start Keelboat) To be able to sail safely as crew of a sloop rigged keelboat 6 to 12 meters with an outboard or inboard motor in daytime. This Standard is ideal for individuals with limited on-water experience. The focus is on initial development of practical skills while participating in operation of a keelboat. There is no exam with Start Keelboat Sailing. Upon completion you receive a Sail Canada logbook, and you will be registered at the Start Keelboat Sailing Standard with Ontario Sailing, the provincial partner of Sail Canada.

BASIC CRUISING - what you learn
To demonstrate the ability to safely operate the vessel in daytime in moderate conditions as both skipper and crew. These capabilities will be evaluated as part of the practical sessions. Individuals with minimal practical on water experience should consider completing the Start Keelboat Sailing Standard before attempting this training level.
On water skills include preparation for sailing, manouvering under power, and handling under sail. Ashore topics include knowledge of boat terms and definitions, safety, weather, seamanship as well as the duties of the skipper and crew.
Theory and ashore knowledge will be evaluated using a closed book written exam. For certification a 70% mark is required. For more details and a review, visit the Ashore Knowledge page here.
