Preserving Our Natural Heritage

At Northern Wake Open Space Initiative, we champion environmental activism to protect and restore forests, watersheds, and open spaces in Northern Wake County. Join us in our mission to sustain the beauty and vitality of our local ecosystems for future generations. Together, we can make a difference in our community and beyond.

Environmental Activism

Smith Creek Watershed

  • The Smith Creek Watershed initiative focuses on promoting clean water and biodiversity by opposing deforestation and overdevelopment in the 584 acres of the Smith Creek Watershed and the Wake Forest Reservoir. The Town of Wake Forest planning staff obtained BOC approval of CPA-23-03 which allows higher density residential development on November 21, 2023 as a final action by the previous Wake Forest Board of Commissioners, despite unanimous objection by existing residents. The BOC approval was unethically scheduled by the planning director to intentionally be post-election and prior to swearing in of the new Board of Commissioners who will, hopefully, be more in favor of forest and watershed preservation.

Joyner Harris Conservation

Join the very active Joyner Harris Forest Conservation project in our mission to save 68 acres of forest from overdevelopment across from Joyner Park in the Richland Creek Watershed area.

Preserve our forests, protect our future.

Join the movement for a greener Wake County!
