Historical locks

Foxton Locks

Narrowboats leaving from our base at Market Harborough will cruise into the basin at the bottom of Foxton Locks. This famous heritage site in the heart of Leicestershire attracts over 4000 boaters each year and is considered one of the most extraordinary feats of engineering in the country. A flight of ten locks comprises the longest staircase of the English canals.

Our holiday boats have the option of going up Foxton Locks or bypassing them altogether, and heading northwards along the rural Leicester line. Our Day Boats do not go up the locks themselves, but use the basin as a convenient turning point.

If you’ve never visited Foxton Locks before as a boater or operated a lock before, you may be glad to hear that there is help at hand in the form of the wonderful Canal and River Trust volunteers. These Lock Keepers will book in your ascent or descent and walk you through the experience. If you’ve never operated a lock before, this is the right place to start.

The pitches are spacious and level and have wonderful views across the valley. The water, grey waste and EHU at each pitch makes for an easy stay. The CDP/Elsan point is spacious and clean and Gary is a great host. The EHU was on a pre-paid meter and worked well. We'll certainly hope to stay again when we're in the area."
