A change is coming but our bookshop is not going away!

Our bookshop at 15 High Street, Oakham, has now been transferred from the local charity Vista, which supported people with sight loss and dual sensory loss, to Deafblind UK. From 23 May 2026 all proceeds from sales at the shop are going to Deafblind UK.

The shop signage will soon be changing, and an updated version of this website is in preparation, but rest assured that the bookshop is staying open and in the hands of the same volunteer team as before. We love to welcome browsers, buyers and donations of more books for us to sell, so please keep coming!

Supporters who especially appreciated Vista's work for people with sight loss in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland may like to read how that work is continuing under a new provider.

Book Donations

Donations of books in good condition - fiction and non-fiction on any subject and of any age - are always welcome. Please bring your donations to the shop during opening hours:

Monday to Saturday, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm

Ideally bring them in bags or boxes that will be easy for our volunteers to carry upstairs to our sorting table and stock room. If you have a very large number of books to donate, please phone us first:

If you are able to sign a Gift Aid declaration, we will be very grateful.

So what might you find?

A classic read

Curl up with your choice from our fiction shelves. Will it be something recently published or maybe an old favourite from our Vintage Classics section? There you will find, for instance, the iconic orange Penguin paperbacks, with authors such as Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh and D H Lawrence.

Sci-fi and fantasy

Collected Star Wars novels are recent arrivals on our Sci-fi shelves, where the stock ranges from the classics such as Arthur C Clarke to Dan Brown’s mysteries. The Game of Thrones series pops up from time to time for the reader who likes a 'meatier' tale.

A choice of detectives

Inspector De Silva is based in Ceylon in the 1930s - but wherever and whenever you'd like a detective story to be set, you should find what you are looking for on our Crime Fiction and Thrillers shelves. These authors are prolific, so ask if you wish to see other titles we have in stock.

Your next adventure

Our Travel section has guide books covering 'almost everywhere' from the Mediterranean to the Americas and the Far East, as well as books and Ordnance Survey maps for walkers in Britain. If you prefer to be an armchair traveller, browse through our collection of Travel Writing.

Our Cookery Corner

You name a celebrity chef, you'll find him/her in our cookery section - but along with baking and cooking and eating ideas you may have missed. For example, we've recently sold The Silver Spoon, published by Phaidon in 2005 – the English translation of an Italian classic, highly praised by reviewers and with delicious-sounding recipes. (And second-hand prices for it online, before postage, started higher than ours.)

"By any chance ...

... do you have X ?" – we love it when we can produce the very thing you hoped for. It may just happen to be in our stock room, as the books donated to us are wonderfully wide-ranging. So it is always worth asking.
