Background Info on Water Scarcity

In Tasmania, water scarcity is a very prevalent issue that has inundated the state in recent years. Drought and the inconsistent rainfall recorded in Tasmania has had a detrimental impact on farmers and their income and as well as impacting on the lives of everyday Tasmanians. With climate change projections predicting ongoing dryness and impacts on agriculture and water supplies and recent drought conditions, including the worst on record for King Island in 2024, have led to water restrictions and challenges for farmers and loss of their livelihood. Overall, Tasmanian rainfall has seen a drastic decline in mass in recent years. Statistics from the bureau of meteorology shows Tasmania experienced significant rainfall deficiencies in early 2025, with the period January to April being the driest start to the year on record since 1900, 48% below the 1961-1990 average. Long-term trends show a general reduction in total annual rainfall since 1975, most notably in autumn, similar to trends in southern Australia. Climate change projections also indicate a likely decrease in overall annual rainfall, particularly in spring and autumn. This is a big issue that we here at AquaSphere Global work tirelessly to mitigate.
