A trust fund was established through the generous donations of Sri. Chandrashekar Desaigoudar and Smt. Aarathi Desaigoudar to initiate this scholarship programme. The programme provides scholarships to academically talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. These students attend rural government high schools in Karnataka and the scholarship supports them in pursuing higher education. Till 2025, over 1300 students have been granted scholarships through the programme, with 67 new students receiving awards annually.

Deenabandhu is a voluntary organization committed to the welfare of orphaned and destitute children from all castes, creed, and religion. The organization was founded in 1992 by Prof. G. S Jayadev in Chamarajanagara, Karnataka.Deenabandhu's humble beginnings comprised of a small group of six boys living in a rented house. Now, Deenabandhu children's home nurtures around 40 boys and 40 girls. The trust also runs a school for children from neighboring villages, catering to LKG to 10th std, and offers significantly discounted education to kids from underprivileged backgrounds. Indo-MIM fully supports the school's expenses.Additionally, Deenabandhu has founded a Teacher Resource Center (TRC) to promote experiential learning in government schools across Karnataka. Prof. G. S. Jayadeva, the founder of Deenabandhu Trust, comes from a distinguished literary lineage, being the son of the renowned Kannada poet, Rashtrakavi G. S. Shivarudrappa. An educationist with almost 40 years of experience, Prof. Jayadeva has dedicated his life to working on various social issues. His hard work and dedication have been recognized with several accolades, including the prestigious “Mahatma Gandhi Seva Award-Karnataka” from the state government. Prof. Jayadeva is also a prolific author of many books in Kannada that cover a wide range of topics such as the development of children and society, environmental issues, globalization,&nbsp;and&nbsp;education.

This place is not just a lifeline for the needy, but also for many of us who come to get a glimpse of the innocence of children. This lifeline is none other than our beloved Jayanna. It is hard to come back once we step in there and look at the sparkle in the children’s eyes. The place has such energy. Following the morning prayers, the children take their plates and sit for breakfast with discipline. After the food is served, they take a moment for a prayer before eating. Then, they neatly clean their plates, return them to their spot, before running off to the next activity. In turns, the children tidy up the dining area, sweeping and mopping it. Then, they go to study, play and so on. Seeing these little disciplined children, one can’t help but feel like giving something of ourselves. We can tell a story, teach them to sing and dance, to play, to paint or do crafts etc. It is a place where we can pass on what we know, something the children will remember for long. “Deenabandhu” is my favourite place and dear to me. It fills me with pride to see that the children who have grown up here have pursued diverse careers and built their futures. My heartfelt wish is for “Deenabandhu” to become a guiding light for many more children in the years to come.“ದೀನಬಂಧು” ಎಂಥಾ ಮುದ್ದಾದ ಹೆಸರು? ಈ ದೀನಬಂಧು ಬರೀ ದೀನರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೇತುವೆ ಅಲ್ಲ, ನಮ್ಮಂತ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮುಗ್ಧತೆಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿ ಬೆಸೆಯುವ ಒಂದು ಸೇತು. ಒಂಥರ ಈ ಸೇತು ಮತ್ತಾರು ಅಲ್ಲ ಅವರೇ ನಮ್ಮ ನಿಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಜಯಣ್ಣ... ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಆ ಜಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಆ ಮುಗ್ಧ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಮಿಂಚಿನ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಸಾಕು ಮರಳಿ ಬರಲು ಆಗುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅಂಥಾ ಒಂದು ಶಕ್ತಿ ಆ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಇದೆ... ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ನಂತರ ಶಿಸ್ತಿನಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ತಟ್ಟೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ತಿಂಡಿ, ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕೂರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಡಿಸಿದಾದ ನಂತರ ಅನ್ನ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ದೈವಕ್ಕೆ ನಮಿಸಿ, ಉಂಡ ನಂತರ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ತಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಸ್ವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಮುಂದಿನ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಓಟ. ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಸರದಿಯಂತೆ ಉಂಡ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಗುಡಿಸಿ - ವರೆಸಿ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಂತರ ಓದು ಆಟ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ. ಇಂಥಾ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಶಿಸ್ತಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ನಮಗೂ ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಏನಾದರೂ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಕೊಡಬೇಕು ಎನಿಸದೇ ಬಿಡದು... ಏನಾದರೊಂದು ಕತೆ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು, ಹಾಡು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡಬಹುದು ನೃತ್ಯ, ಆಟ, ಪೇಯಿಂಟಿಗ್, ಕ್ರಾöಫ್ಟ್ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ. ಹೀಗೆ ನಿಮಗೆ / ನಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವ, ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಬಹಳ ಕಾಲದವರೆಗೂ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನಾವು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿಡುವ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ ಬರಬಹುದು ಅಂಥಾ ಜಾಗ. ನನಗೆ ಅಚ್ಚು-ಮೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಬಹಳ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದ ಜಾಗ “ದೀನಬಂಧು” ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮುಂದೆ ಬಹಳ ಒಳ್ಳೊಳ್ಳೆ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಕೂಡ ಹೋಗಿ ಬದುಕು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತೆ ಅಲ್ವೆ. ಈ “ದೀನಬಂಧು” ಹೀಗೆ ನೂರುಕಾಲ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ದಾರಿ ದೀಪವಾಗಿರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹೃದಯ ಪೂರಕವಾಗಿ ಹಾರೈಸುವ.

Deenabandhu was founded in 1992 with a first batch of 6 boys in a rented house by Prof. G.S. Jayadev. During this time, Ms. Magali Reynaud from Reuters, Switzerland visited Deenabandhu. Ms. Magali was deeply impressed and promised support. This was a stepping stone for Deenabandhu, a promise followed a priceless action and monetary aid. In 1994, the construction of cottages for boys began. Thus, 4 cottages were built which houses 12 boys each under the care of a house mother/father.When a need arose to provide homes for some of the boys’ sisters, it was decided to start a home for girls in 2005 in a rented house close to the existing boys’ home. Eventually, funds were raised from generous donors to build a home for girls. In 2010, a green home for girls was established. The girls’ home can accommodate 40 girls.In 1998, a primary school was started in an area of 1.5 acres close to Ramasamudra village of Chamarajanagara town. The school is envisaged as a tool for social change and provides creative education for children from economically backward families. The education is highly subsidized, levying only a nominal fee. Subsequently, high school was also started and thus currently it provides education from LKG to 10th Std. The school is financially supported by Indo-MIM. In 2006, a Teacher Resource Center (TRC) was setup in the school premises with the intention to promote activity-based teaching methodologies in government schools in the district. Over the years, the TRC has grown to be a credible organisation working on experiential education&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;state.

Deenabandhu offers a warm and caring home for boys and girls who lack parental care. The trust runs separate homes for boys and girls. Generally, children aged between 6 and 8 years are taken under the care of the home. Once admitted, every child receives extensive care and education until they finish their 10th standard, after which they choose their preferred course based on their interests and abilities. The trust continues to offer unwavering support to each child until they become self-sufficient.In addition to academic education, the children are exposed to a broad range of extracurricular activities, such as classical music, dance, theatre, film-making, sculpting, and sports, fostering their overall development. Over the years, Deenabandhu has successfully facilitated the growth of more than 150 children under its care, with many of them having transitioned into economically stable adults.Our alumni are a diverse group of professionals, including actors, journalists, artists, musicians, engineers, entrepreneurs, carpenters, and drivers. Deenabandhu school serves as a means for social transformation and offers experiential activity based education to children from economically challenged families. The school is financially completely supported by Indo-MIM.The school has been committed to delivering high-quality education to children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds since 1999. To fulfill this objective, the school offers education at a highly subsidized rate, with a minimal participation fee in the range INR 1500 – 3000 per year, less than 10% of the total cost. The school not only provides excellent education but also offers nutritious mid-day meals to promote the holistic development of the students. Deenabandhu School caters to children from LKG to 10th standard, with a total student strength of over 430.Deenabandhu School follows an experiential teaching and learning approach, and the faculty has created over 800 teaching materials, experiments and projects to enhance the learning experience. The school curriculum also includes theatre, handicrafts, computer training, basic agricultural skills, and it features a Kayaka Kuteera where traditional skills like pottery and charaka&nbsp;are&nbsp;taught.

Scholarship for Higher Students (SHE) Programme

Yoga Gives Back, USA launched the Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) programme at Deenabandhu School. The programme provides SHE scholarships to students who have completed their 10th standard at the school, and supports them financially for a period of 5 to 7 years to complete their college education. The scholarships are awarded to deserving students based on their academic merit and financial backgrounds.Since 2022, the scholarship programme was also extended to students from a neighbouring government school with which we work closely.

Deenabandhu School has adopted a neighbouring government school, the Government Higher Primary School, Ramasamudra. This collaboration aims to promote the exchange of resources, knowledge, and experiences between the two schools. The goal is to ensure that the children at the government school receive the same calibre of high-quality education as those attending Deenabandhu School.

Since its inception in 2002, the Deenabandhu Teacher Resource Center (TRC) has been dedicated to promoting experiential education in government schools within the Chamarajanagara district.Currently, the TRC actively collaborates with over 200 government schools to provide teaching resources and training programs to incorporate activity-based teaching methodologies into the classroom. To achieve this goal, the TRC conducts a variety of activities, including the establishment of Learning Centers in schools, workshops for teachers and children, the development of teaching aids and educational films, the production of a newsletter called "Anubhava," and the operation of a mobile science lab.Project Shaale, facilitated by the TRC, collaborates closely with 42 government schools. We have established 8 Learning Centers in government schools. Each Learning center is tagged to 5-6 nearby government schools. At each Learning Center, we conduct regular meetings for teachers where we collaborate with them in designing and creating TLMs. Additionally, our resource persons visit these schools conducting experiments and demonstrations.Thanks to its effective efforts, the TRC has become a reputable organization that is highly valued by both teachers and students. Runners cross the finish line wearing traditional embroidered vyshyvankas alongside modern athletic gear, symbolizing the connection between history and contemporary life. Blue and yellow medals mark moments of pride, relief, and shared emotion. These candid moments capture how Ukrainian traditions live on within the diaspora, carried forward through movement, community.

To promote an attitude of research and innovation in Science, the Chan Desaigoudar foundation in collaboration with Deenabandhu Trust, started the Science Talent Award Programme in 2017-18. This science project competition is organised for Government high schools in Chamarajanagara region. An exhibition is held where these schools showcase their models and are evaluated. Two winners are selected, with the first-place recipient receiving Rs. 55,000 and the second-place recipient receiving Rs. 25,000.

Vijnana Loka, located near the Deenabandhu School, is a vibrant space consisting of a Science park and a Science gallery. The Science Park consists of a variety of installations which illustrate various scientific concepts. The gallery contains interactive exhibits where students can learn various concepts through hands-on interaction.This center attracts students from government schools in the district and we arrange transportation for them. They spend an entire day exploring the various exhibits and models. Two facilitators oversee the activities for the children. The children also go through a workshop exclusively designed for them where they make Science toys.There are no such centers in neighbouring regions. A center of this nature is typically out of reach for rural schools and children. Therefore, it plays an important role in developing scientific temperament in the district.

Biodiversity Project aims to educate children about the importance of biodiversity by making them plant rare and endangered plant/tree species in school surroundings. Considering the rapid depletion of biodiversity due to human activities, it is essential that children learn about biodiversity as part of their school life.Saplings of rare and endangered species of plants endemic to Chamarajanagar region are nurtured at the Deenabandhu nursery until they reach a height of 2-4 feet. These saplings are transported to various government schools, where the students will plant them and take responsibility for their care. Through this hands-on involvement with plants and trees, a bond forms between students and nature, fostering an attitude of respect towards biodiversity and the environment.
