Journey Through Theology and Leadership

A brief orientation and introduction for incoming students who take my doctoral courses. Note that assignments are due Sundays at 11:59 pm, and in the eighth week, they are due before the weekend when the 8 weeks end. This is centered around my teaching in Ecclesiology and Contemporary Society, but applicable to all courses. I teach at Hampton University School of Religion.

A Course Orientation: My Teaching Philosophy and Expectations for Doctoral Scholars

Dr. Robert White, Dr. Tony Moyers, and Dr. Eric Betts have an engaging conversation about reading the Bible through a cultural lens. Together, they explore how our traditions, experiences, and assumptions influence the way we interpret Scripture—and why understanding the historical and cultural world of the Bible can deepen both our faith and our understanding. Dr. Betts teaches a course entitled Toward an African American Hermeneutic at Hampton University School of Religion. As a proud PhD product of the University of South Africa, which provided me with an intercultural perspective on the church and its theology, combined with my extensive world travels (13 countries,) I bring a unique expertise to our discussions. I have been a black church practitioner and pastor for more than 20 years and serving in academia for the past decade has been both a privilege and the highlight of my professional life. I am one of the founding theological educators at Hampton University School of Religion. As a published author of three books, Left Behind: A Historic and Ongoing Blackopolypse, Reconciliation: Geopolitical Perspectives of a Black Theologian and Good Cop/Bad Cop: A Sociological and Theological Study of the Black Muslim Movement and the Black Church, I deeply appreciate the immense value of theological research. I strongly believe in the power of education to empower individuals and effect meaningful change.I understand myself as an Africana religious intellectual. I approach theology as an ongoing conversation among Scripture, the Christian tradition, and the religious and intellectual experiences of African-descended peoples.
