The problem
Chicago's underdeveloped communities face significant challenges, including systemic disinvestment, school closures, gun violence, and the impacts of gentrification and displacement. These communities often experience uneven distribution of resources and opportunities, with predominantly Black neighborhoods on the Southside facing systemic disinvestment and amenity-rich neighborhoods in the northern part of the city. America is experiencing a significant housing shortage, with estimates indicating a deficit of over 4.5 million homes, particularly affecting affordability for low-income households. And in Chicago, we face a significant housing shortage, with a shortage of over 119,000 units and more than half of renters spending over 30% of their income on rent.
