Roof Repair with Traditional Materials

The two chimneys seen here were capped off at roof level. We rebuilt them using second hand red stocks and a lime mortar mix using NHL3.5. Soot was used to age the new brickwork on custmers request.

Here the chineys are finnished. The flaunching is a strong lime mortar mix of NHL5 and sharp sand. The lime mortar will not trap water as a cement mortar would  so frost damage is less likely.

Georgian house in Bermondsey. Here we fitted new windows. We repaired window seats and recreated shutter boxes and shutters.

Georgian house in Spitalfields. We were suppposed to be just pointing this wall. On inspction we became fearful that it might collapse.

Steel props to support the oak beam and floors above.

Probably the worst brickwork repair I have ever seen. Done in the 70s. No attempt to clear debrris, sit new on a sound base or tie into existing. We replaced in short sections tying in and packing joints.

This is a photo from a series of photographs taken while only a small section of the row houses were restored. It was winter time in 2005, in Istanbul.

Lime mortar is probably the most important material we use. Georgian houses that we have worked on have been damaged by cement mortars used to point or render brickwork. Timbers that have survived centuries have rotted in a few decades because cement has trapped them in water.
