The Curfew.
The subject of this watercolour is derived from the poem The Curfew. In the poem, a lonely man hears the curfew ringing across the water. Varley worked primarily in watercolour. He strove to make his watercolours as large, and as aspiring in
content, as paintings in oil. The particular beauty of watercolours, according to him, lay in the panoramic rendering of the ‘clear skies, distances and water’.

I was freezing cold staying in the tent cabins in Half Dome (formerly Curry) Village in Yosemite Valley with my dad who was there for work, so I got up and drove around the valley at 6 am. There’s been lots of fires in the area and the valley was filled with this thick smoke. Stopped at a turnout near Tunnel View and shot this photo - I really love the symmetry of it and the smooth gradients the smoke produces.

The last night of a two week stay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

Guarded flowers. The last warmth before winter. This is where we belong, not in cities with the smog and debt of modern life. We need clean clear air with open spaces where we can grow. Crowd the mind with nonsense and you gain nothing but pain. Realise what is worth the most, what makes you live truly free without regret or worry for the time when you are gone. Your spirit can fly with honour knowing you’ve lived with honor and always strived to do the right thing. A painting isn’t just flat color. It will always tell the story of who you are. The wise will always flow with love.
