About Mark O'Mara

Mark
Mark – Ligurian Photographer & Sea Storyteller
Based in Nervi, I capture the soul of the Ligurian coast — above and below the water. From underwater freediving shots to emotional moments at events, and from product photos to spontaneous encounters on the beach, my photography is rooted in instinct, territory, and a deep love for the real.
Below is an interview that tells more about how it all began, what I do, and why I do it.

Discover Golfo Paradiso with Mark O' Mara: Your Expert Photographer and Local Guide
Q: Who are you, and what kind of photography do you do?
Hi, I’m Mark. I was born 50 years ago in Genova Nervi, and I've lived by the sea and along the cliffs of the Golfo Paradiso since I was a child.
I focus on freediving underwater photography, sunsets over the water, and emotional moments at events. I also work with local companies, taking product photos for ads and e-commerce. One of the most challenging — and satisfying — projects was photographing entire jewelry collections and getting them ready for Amazon listings.
Q: When and how did you get into photography?
I started as a kid at the Imola racing circuit, shooting from the pit lane during the MotoGP world championship. Back then, I saw legends like Freddie Spencer, Kenny Roberts, Marco Lucchinelli, and Loris Reggiani — not to mention the unforgettable "Papi the Pink Panther". It all started with my first camera, a Cortina my parents gave me.
Photography runs in the family: my father was shooting underwater back in the 60s. Thanks to his job, I spent over a decade shooting at various world championship tracks.
Q: What kind of photography represents you the most today?
I have a strong connection with the Golfo Paradiso — from Nervi to Bogliasco, Sori, Recco, Camogli, San Fruttuoso, and Portofino, including the Monte di Portofino National Park.
Since the local whale-watching service started, I never skip a season without chasing "The Shot". I also love photographing the beauty of women — never predictable, always fascinating — and funny situations. One New Year's Eve in Camogli, I captured a photo of a transparent bag on a bench with a handwritten note: “You lost your dentures” — and yes, the dentures were inside.
Q: What’s your style or approach when shooting?
Instinct. I can set up a shot if needed, but I prefer capturing raw, real emotions. Maybe it comes from my background — you can't ask a racer to pose during a race, just like you can’t tell a dolphin when to jump.
Q: Any projects or works you’re particularly proud of?
I’ve created two English-language photo books with the idea of offering them to local tourism offices in the Golfo Paradiso:
“A Me Gli Occhi” is about what happens above the water — perfect for people who don't live here but want to feel the beauty of this coastline. On clear days, you can even see Capraia, Gorgona, Corsica, and the start of the French coast.
“Sottosopra” focuses on the underwater world, Ligurian marine life, and summer moods. Some of the most requested prints for home décor come from that collection.
Q: Who are your typical clients today?
Aside from some “official” shoots, my clients are mostly tourists — nature lovers, curious people, sometimes sporty, sometimes just looking to relax.
After a 2-hour shoot on the beach that fits their style, I often point them to the best spots for an aperitivo or events that evening.
I’ve also developed a matrix with over 200 combinations across 30+ beaches — including factors like accessibility (even for seniors or people with disabilities), parking, sand or rocks, and even beach etiquette.
Q: What makes you different from other photographers?
That’s a tough one — many colleagues are brilliant at capturing moments, others shine in post-production.
Personally, I believe a photo should first and foremost speak to the client. When I shoot for myself, I choose everything. But when I’m hired by couples or small groups, I provide both my artistic version and the raw files — so they can apply their own filters, crop it how they like, or make it theirs.
Let’s call it open to your customization.
Q: How can people contact you?
You can reach me via the contact page on this site.
I’m on social media, but since my other profession is business development and startup marketing, I know how much work good social media would take — and honestly, I don’t have the time or energy for that.
Photography is my second job, but it’s also my second skin. I work mainly by reservation — sometimes even on custom coastal tours by boat.
