Profits Come from Risk: Turning Uncertainty into Opportunity
Walter Wriston, former CEO of Citicorp, once posed a timeless question: “If wages come from work, rent from real estate, and interest from savings, where do profits come from?” His answer was simple yet profound: “Profits come from risk.”
In every pursuit—whether in business, politics, or life itself—risk is unavoidable. We live in an uncertain world, and progress demands that we face it head-on.
Understanding Risk
Risk is the possibility of loss. It is the measure of both the probability and severity of an event that could negatively impact earnings, reputation, or outcomes. To take a risk is to expose oneself to the chance of failure—but also to the chance of success.
Risk as Opportunity
When properly assessed and managed, risk transforms from a threat into a powerful driver of growth. It can prevent losses, generate profits, and turn potential defeat into victory. Risk is not something to fear—it is something to master.
