Can you tell me more about yourself.
Of course. I am a retired science teacher with over 40 years experience. In 2023 I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but I have now fully recovered. If you want to find out anything about this disease my website is thepurplepancreas.co.uk I love reading and I am currently writing a fantasy detective novel. I also love playing bridge and i am a qualified bridge teacher. I also go to a local church and I am a qualified school pastor with a local school. I also love the countryisde and I am a qualified assessor for the Duke of Edingburgh scheme. This love of the countryside is one of the things that makes me passionate about helping others to enjoy their science.
Why are you called the purple biologist?
When I first set up a website to help pupils with biology I asked my students what it should be called. One said the silverbiologist but I felt that made me sound really old. One said the greenbiologist but I felt that might make me sound like an ecowarrior. Someone then suggested the purplebiologist and this met with approval and the name stuck. I have subsequently used the purple tag for my website about pancreatic cancer thepurplepancreas.co.uk
What are your qualifications?
I have an Honours degree in Biological Science and a Masters degree in Educational management. I have also studied many subjects such as motivational theory, helping with special needs and counselling. I am also DBS checked.
Do you offer lessons for different education levels?
Yes, I offer tailored lessons for G.C.S.E. science and A level biology for both school and adult learners. I have experience with all examination boards.
Do you provide any supplementary learning materials?
Yes, I provide supplementary materials such as study guides, practice worksheets, and recommended reading lists. I give homework tasks which I subsequently mark.
What topics do you cover in your lessons?
I cover a wide range of topics and I will design lessons according to the areas you wish to cover. There is an emphasis on understanding coupled with examination and motovational techniques.
Can you help with exam preparation for science?
Absolutely, I provide focused exam preparation sessions, including practice tests, revision of key concepts, and exam strategies.
Will having lessons with you improve my grades?
Not necessarily!!!
I can deliver the most amazing lessons and ask you to do homework but you might pay no attention and not complete the work. However if you are prepared to put in the effort, having online lessons can result in boosted grades. Remember exam grades are not everything. There may be other benefits such as increased motivation, increased confidence or better exam techniques which are difficult to measure and may increase performances in other subject areas.
Do you offer any trial lessons or consultations?
Yes, I offer an initial free trial lesson to discuss your learning goals and how I can help. There is no obligation to have further lessons and I promise I will not bombard you with phone calls to see if you want to continue.
