The whole purpose of military training is to rewire the brain, and 18 year olds are at an age where this is easy as new connections are forming all the time. This takes away the natural desires to refuse to kill, to run away if danger occurs, and to think before acting. It is replaced by obey orders given by a superior, to advance at the purceived enemy, and to kill or maim on contact. Post military service these new pathways remain, no detraining takes place.
Many ex servicemen and women who have experieced combat are affected for life with flashback memories, moral injury, and no mental health help from military experienced therapists. They are effectively hung out to dry. Many end up turning to alcohol, street drugs, and violence in relationships, become homeless, unemployable, or serve time in prison as a result. Is this the future we want for our children and grandchildren. I hope not.
