Yampachen Hot Springs

Located about 90 kilometers northwest of Lhasa, Yampachen (Yangbajain) is a small town in the Yampachen Valley. Surrounded by vast grasslands, nomad tents, and snow-capped mountains, it is best known for its geothermal resources and the famous Yampachen Hot Springs.

The area has abundant geothermal energy, which has been used to generate electricity for Lhasa and nearby regions. Completed in 1977, the Yampachen Geothermal Power Station was one of China's earliest large-scale geothermal power projects.

Highlights of Yampachen Hot Springs
Yampachen Hot Springs are renowned for their high altitude, geothermal activity, and spectacular mountain scenery. Soaking in the hot springs while admiring the surrounding peaks is a unique experience on the Tibetan Plateau.

The geothermal water emerging from underground can reach temperatures close to the boiling point due to the area's active geothermal field. The bathing pools, however, are cooled to comfortable temperatures for visitors.

Many travelers choose to relax in the hot springs after arriving in Tibet, as the warm water can help relieve fatigue from long journeys. Local people also believe the mineral-rich waters may have relaxing effects.

Soaking in the hot springs offers a memorable experience in the high-altitude landscape of the Tibetan Plateau.

During colder months, you may even see snowflakes drifting down while enjoying the outdoor pools, creating a memorable contrast between the warm water and the crisp mountain air.
