<p>CVO is a large-scale production that takes an unconventional approach, speaking the language of culture by screening the 1922 silent film Nosferatu on Hallowe’en, accompanied by a live orchestra. Most non-believers wouldn’t dream of going to church that night, but they’ll happily head to a theatre to watch a vampire film.</p><p>In this story, right in the middle of the nightmare—when much of the town has died under the vampire’s curse and scientists insist it’s an epidemic, or rats (perhaps bats?) — the heroine, Ellen, finds in an ancient book that only the willing sacrifice of an innocent can break the curse, banish the darkness and destroy the supposedly ‘immortal’ villain. She does exactly that, saving the whole town.</p><p>Whether the filmmakers in 1922 intended such an overt parallel with Christ is hard to say, but the modern response is telling: when the conductor asks the audience afterwards, “Who is Ellen?”, someone always shouts, “Jesus!” That tells us the message has clearly landed, and the language we’re using is being understood. CVO has been leading more and more people to salvation.</p>

<h3>In my case, it was need — specific circumstances — that sparked the idea.</h3><p>Those situations showed me that, for the Gospel to be proclaimed effectively, the tools and methods must be adapted to the audience. That requires the Apostle&nbsp;Paul’s flexibility.</p><p>Whether I was reaching musicians, visual artists, university professors, attendees at the largest festival in Europe, patrons of satanic clubs, the homeless, or children, God taught me to use the right tools and language so that the Gospel would be understood and lives would be genuinely transformed.</p>

<p>The layout, combining photographs and text in each artwork, was created by me. <br><br>My colleague, graphic designer Leigh, chose beautiful, perfectly suited fonts for each image and story.</p>

<p>The participants wrote their own stories. Our job as the creative team was to keep everything consistent and pull the artwork together. With their permission, we made only minor tweaks—tidying up the grammar, shifting a few sentences between images, and trimming some sections so the text would sit neatly under the photos.</p>

<p>The leaflets and booklet (including printing preparation) were expertly produced by my colleague, graphic designer Leigh.<br><br>Leigh also chose beautiful, perfectly suited fonts for each image and story.</p><p>The layout, combining photographs and text in each artwork, was created by me. </p><p></p>

Design phase

<p>I directed the shoots with technical support from Leigh and Margot and creative input from Margot, Kate, Leigh and Bryce. <br><br>Leigh devised convincing blood effects and even found a scrapyard where the owner let us smash up whatever we needed. <br><br>Margot worked wonders make-up (e.g. cuts and scars), and contributed brilliant ideas throughout. She secured fantastic locations, including actual wards at Tauranga Hospital; only she knows how she managed to pull that off. She's also one of the best HR persons I have ever worked with.<br><br></p>

<p>I handled most of the editing and pre-press work, but it only came together thanks to the team’s backing. <br><br>While I was editing in New Zealand, Margot secured a quiet workspace when the office was out of action and even whisked me off to the coast when she realised I’d gone too long without a break. <br><br>While editing in Australia, Fran and Stephen were my lifesavers providing more than I needed and ever expected. These people genuinely helped make the work happen.</p>

<p>Written and Video work about pioneering in Christianity</p>

<p>This presentation was created for the Salvation Army. It includes a few examples of the many situations in which God has given me the extraordinary privilege of being an instrument in His hands.</p>

<p>I’m a missionary with over 10 years’ evangelism and church-planting experience across multiple countries and continents, passionate about sharing the Gospel with those who wouldn’t consider attending a Sunday service, or who are strongly opposed to Christianity. With a strong understanding of the importance of language and cultural context, I often use unconventional approaches.</p><p>I’ve been using Christianity Explored and Alpha to live out my conviction that Christianity is neither about building human empires or institutions, nor about preaching, ticking a box, counting raised hands and then walking away. I believe Christianity is about Christ and about making true disciples by nurturing them, as Jesus and the apostles did. And for this purpose, CE has proved an incredibly effective tool.</p>

<h3>Responding to real needs</h3><p>What I admire most about The Salvation Army’s approach to pioneering is its ability to identify pressing contemporary issues and respond effectively to real needs as they emerge.</p><p>When James Barker realised that entire families—including children—were producing matches with a toxic ingredient that led to necrosis of the jaw and bones, The Salvation Army boldly decided to purchase a match factory. Their goal was not profit but to compel the entire industry to change. I can only imagine the impact on the workers who benefited, not only from the replacement of harmful yellow phosphorus with a safer red variant, but also from an extraordinary 50% wage increase. Many of these workers must have wondered who would act so generously with no profit motive, and I am certain that, through this example, some came to understand Christ’s love and became believers. Following this, manufacturers abandoned their claim that switching was too expensive, resulting in industry-wide reform. What an inspiring illustration of pioneering and of expanding the boundaries of God’s Kingdom.</p><p>Although match factories are no longer a primary concern, I continue to admire The Salvation Army for recognising modern problems that many prefer to ignore—such as child trafficking and modern slavery—and for pioneering solutions.</p><p></p><h3>Personal Examples of Grassroots Pioneering</h3><p>Let me offer a few personal examples of grassroots pioneering that, if not already employed by The Salvation Army, might serve as potential ideas:</p><p></p><h3>Neverland</h3><p>Shortly after I became a Christian, while studying and living in the European Union, I discovered a large, multi-generational community near a newly built housing estate—hundreds of families with children were living in World War II-era buildings scheduled for demolition, many of whom were affected by domestic abuse and alcohol dependency. I had as little experience with vulnerable families as James Barker had with match production, yet I also understood that God often chooses to work through imperfect people who trust Him, revealing His power, compassion, grace, and love to others. Recognising a pressing need, I prayed for guidance and soon joined friends in establishing a lively centre devoted to supporting these children. My greatest joy was seeing some of them attend our Bible study, come to faith in Christ, and request baptism.</p><p></p><h3>Art as a Transformative Tool</h3><p>Understanding how profoundly art can reshape perspectives, I organised intensive, year-long workshops in painting, photography, animation, and video for the children from “Neverland.” They proudly displayed their creations at the “Neverland Exists” exhibition in the city centre, earning appreciation from peers and the wider community. Watching them gain confidence, discover their unique talents, and recognise their potential powerfully demonstrated art’s capacity to change lives.</p><p></p><h3>Diaries of despair</h3><p>After completing a missionary school in Germany, I was invited to support a missionary branch in one of the world’s most beautiful locations. To my shock, I discovered that beneath the beauty of this city and its entire region lay a serious issue—widespread anxiety, depression, and high suicide rates. These struggles remained largely taboo, especially among Christians. Despite the risks of “opening Pandora’s box,” I felt God calling me to address this issue alongside my friends. Together, we organised an exhibition, sharing stories of real people from the region who had faced these challenges but were saved by God. The event provided people with understanding and hope. At the time, I was unaware that more than 100 years earlier, in 1907, Alice Barker, wife of James Barker, had pioneered The Salvation Army’s international anti-suicide network. What incredible courage!</p><p></p><h3>Identity crisis</h3><p>Many people are unaware of their potential, their true identity in God, and the purpose of their lives. As a result, they often fall for the world’s lies about them, leading to personal tragedy. Realising this, I established a cultural space offering a wide range of artistic workshops, exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and live interviews with artists, musicians, and public figures—all free of charge and funded by City Hall and the Ministry of Culture. The impact was extraordinary...</p><p></p><h3>Spiritualism and witchcraft&nbsp;</h3><p>Another major issue is how children are drawn towards spiritualism and witchcraft through consumer culture. It is tragic that Halloween, a festival focused on darkness, is more widely marketed to children than Easter, which represents light. I can imagine hosting outreach events in London at this time of year, guiding young people to understand why playing with fire is extremely dangerous and pointing them towards Christ instead.</p><p></p><h3>Using the enemy's tools</h3><p>Growing loneliness, social media addiction, and the isolating effects of virtual reality and gaming culture are also major concerns. Support groups and retreats exist for those who have identified the problem, helping them reconnect with other people, nature, and God. But what about those who haven’t yet recognised the issue?</p><p>A great solution would be to use the medium itself:</p><ul><li><p>Create interdisciplinary exhibitions in virtual reality, offering an immersive way to engage with faith.</p></li><li><p>Develop the first-ever Christian RPG video game, akin to Fallout or Cyberpunk 2077, that is both visually appealing and theologically sound, leading players to experience the Gospel through gameplay.</p></li></ul><p></p><h3>Summary</h3><p>To be a Pioneer in The Salvation Army is, I believe, the same as it was for Paul the Apostle. After his personal encounter with Christ, he refused to compromise with darkness. Calling himself a soldier for Christ, he risked not only his comfort, reputation, and career, but his very life. With the boldness of a lion, he planted the banner of God’s Kingdom in unclaimed territory. He, along with many others, gave everything—but they emerged victorious, securing the greatest reward of all: an eternal relationship with our beloved God.<br><br></p><h4>***<br><br>My involvement in the written work:</h4><p>All content was written by me.</p><p></p>

<h3><br>My involvement in the video work:</h3><p>I developed the concept, wrote the script, and created and edited the video using my own photo/video/audio libraries as well as materials from the internet. I voiced the video using a speech generator and made subtitles.</p>

<h4>Written and Video work about <em>NEO-Lazarus </em>art hub.</h4>

<h3>It started with a vision</h3><p>Between 2015 and 2016, in Poznań — one of Poland’s largest cities, situated between Berlin and Warsaw — the <em>ID Foundation</em>, which focused on helping people discover their unique, God-given identity through art, culture and unconventional approaches, launched an ambitious project: a large arts hub in the city’s most challenging district, known as <em>Lazarus</em> (much like William Booth’s work in the darkest parts of London). The aim was to break the cycle of children becoming teenage hooligans and teenagers becoming criminals, and to help reshape the area.</p><p></p><h3>Bring to life</h3><p>The Foundation’s president named the project <em>NEO-Lazarus</em>&nbsp;— officially to signal a new chapter for the <em>Lazarus</em> district, but, as he shared only with a small circle of trusted Christians, also as a call to use this platform to bring spiritually dead people to Christ, so that He might raise them to new life and make them new people devoted to our loving Father. Knowing it would immediately put off many otherwise curious visitors, <em>NEO-Lazarus</em> was intentionally not promoted as a Christian initiative.</p><p></p><h3>Unique combination</h3><p>The concept combined elements of the Ancient Greek <em>Academy</em> of Plato (bringing together different disciplines), the German <em>Bauhaus</em> movement and school (reimagine the material world to reflect the unity of all the arts), and the mid-20th-century <em>Suzuki </em>Japanese teaching&nbsp;method (which reveals the unique potential in everyone).</p><p></p><h3>Free of charger?</h3><p>Located in the heart of Poznań and based in a 7,500 sq ft space, it set out to develop talent and deepen cultural understanding. It encouraged visitors and regular students to explore different art forms and cultural expressions through an interdisciplinary approach, welcoming a diverse audience including children, teenagers, students, adults and older people, and offering a wide range of professional cultural and artistic initiatives. Everything was completely free of charge for visitors, funded through grants and awards from the National Department of Culture, the City Hall Department of Culture, the City Council and private donors.</p><p></p><h3>On the top of that...</h3><p>...the heart of NEO-Lazarus was a carefully chosen group of mature, proven followers of Christ, who intentionally built relationships and friendships with participants throughout year-round lessons, workshops and events delivered by both passionate practitioners and recognised industry professionals — musicians, producers, travellers and guest speakers.</p><p></p><h3>Feedback</h3><p>It became known as a unique hub where the line between everyday people and show-business professionals blurred, nurturing fresh creative minds and offering significant development opportunities regardless of background or wealth.</p><p></p><h4>Our fruits and the input of Christianity Explored</h4><p>Over four years, we hosted more than 300 events with over 1,000 attendees. An even greater achievement was seeing beneficiaries discover their identity in God, many shared how their outlook was completely transformed — shifting from passive non-believers or even atheists to conscious followers of Christ who decided to use their gifts to share the Gospel. Several went on to arts-focused secondary schools and universities, graduated, and launched creative careers. Others moved from beneficiaries to assistants within <em>ID </em>Foundation organisation. Some connected so strongly with the vision that they joined the board, received training, and became coordinators of later projects. <p>Written and Design work about&nbsp;<em>The Veil, Torn!</em> evangelising multimedia installation &amp; exhibition.</p>

<h4>Real epidemic...</h4><p>There are several serious epidemics that mainstream media rarely speaks about...One of them is the crisis of identity, which can lead to confusion, low self-esteem, a lack of purpose, vulnerability to manipulation, and profound struggles such as anxiety, depression and even suicide.</p><p></p><h4>Identity</h4><p>In my third year at the Academy of Fine Arts, I chose this as the focus of my bachelor’s thesis: “Identity: Exploring the Phenomenon of Identity and Its Absence”. As a living testimony to God’s existence, and to the healing and freedom found in our identity in Christ, I wanted to explore whether faith offers an answer to many of today’s identity-related struggles.</p><p></p><h4>Resistance</h4><p>Knowing I was doing something meaningful in the spiritual realm, I expected resistance, so it wasn’t a huge drama or a surprise when it came. My supervisor rejected the topic, so I changed supervisors and eventually found a professor who, though not a believer, recognised the value of an authentic and serious piece of work.</p><p></p><h4>Rigorous foundation</h4><p>To make space for my testimony, I built a rigorous academic foundation: philosophical and psychological theories of identity, identity disorder, and related consequences such as addiction, manipulation and despair. Drawing on respected thinkers — including Carl Gustav Jung — I also explored the relationship between identity and spirituality, and asked whether identity in God is possible.</p><p></p><h4>Multimedia installation</h4><p>Alongside the written thesis, I created a multimedia installation titled “Friend – The Veil, Torn!”: an illuminated cube designed as an unconventional “book”. Inspired by Matthew 27:51, it symbolised the torn veil and the opening of access to God’s presence through Christ, inviting an intimate, one-to-one encounter with our heavenly Father.</p><p></p><h4>Academics’ reaction</h4><p>From the outset, I wasn’t surprised that my work attracted opposition, and that my supervisor initially rejected my dissertation proposal. In the end, however, the project — openly Gospel-centred and decidedly unconventional — was approved and awarded a high mark, which genuinely caught me off guard. Bow Arts London - Lakeside Open Studios

<p>'Lakeside Centre' occupies the building whose rooftop appeared in an episode of 'Misfits'.
