Nemo’s Garden: the world’s first underwater farm
Nemo’s Garden is the world’s first site dedicated to cultivating terrestrial plants underwater. This remarkable project consists of submerged biospheres where plants—mainly basil seedlings used for pesto production—are grown.
For optimal growth, these plants require stable temperatures, good sunlight, and very humid soil conditions. The underwater domes, placed just a few metres below the surface, are designed to naturally provide all these conditions without any external intervention. This method also eliminates the need for pesticides, reduces land use, and avoids wasting drinking water for irrigation.
The resulting plants have been found to contain a significantly higher concentration of essential oils and antioxidants compared to those grown on land.
The biospheres are located just off the coast and are illuminated, making them visible even from the seafront promenade. However, for snorkelling enthusiasts, observing them up close is an even more fascinating experience.
They are arranged in a circle around the Tree of Life, a metal sculpture featuring a tower topped with a large lotus flower. This artwork symbolises evolution, interconnection, and the harmony between nature and technology.
