How Sound Travels Through the Body
Sound is a form of vibration that moves through air, liquids, and solid materials. The human body is made mostly of water and soft tissues, which means sound waves can travel through it very efficiently. When a person lies on the Vibroacoustic table, specially chosen low-frequency sounds are converted into gentle physical vibrations by transducers built into the table.
These vibrations pass through the surface of the body and into the muscles, connective tissues, and fluids. Because sound naturally spreads through these materials, the vibration can move through many areas of the body at once, creating a sensation of gentle pulsing or resonance.
Unlike loud sound that we hear mainly with our ears, low frequencies can also be felt physically. The body experiences them as rhythmic movement rather than just noise. This rhythmic stimulation may encourage muscles to relax, circulation to increase, and the nervous system to settle into a calmer state.
Many people describe the experience as feeling like a gentle internal massage created by sound itself. The combination of vibration, rhythm, and relaxation allows the body an opportunity to slow down and enter a deeper state of rest and recovery.
Vibroacoustic sessions are designed to support relaxation and wellbeing. They are not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions but may complement other wellbeing practices that support rest, stress reduction, and body awareness.
Quotes
Nikola Tesla
Inventor, electrical engineer, and pioneer of alternating current electricity.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
Tesla’s work explored electrical resonance and energy fields, ideas that helped inspire later thinking about vibration throughout nature and the body.
Albert Einstein
One of the most influential physicists in history and creator of the theory of relativity.
“Everything in life is vibration.”
Einstein’s work revealed that matter and energy are deeply connected, reinforcing the idea that the physical world — including the human body — exists as dynamic energetic processes.
Pythagoras
Mathematician and philosopher who studied the relationship between mathematics and musical harmony.
“There is geometry in the humming of the strings… there is music in the spacing of the spheres.”
Pythagoras discovered that musical notes follow precise mathematical ratios, laying the foundations for the idea that sound and harmony influence both the natural world and human wellbeing.
Hans Jenny
Founder of the scientific field known as cymatics, which studies how sound vibrations create visible patterns in matter.
“Sound is the formative principle.”
Jenny demonstrated that sound frequencies can organise particles, water, and materials into geometric patterns — showing that vibration has a physical shaping effect on matter.
Evelyn Glennie
World-renowned solo percussionist who is profoundly deaf and experiences music through vibration.
“Hearing is basically a specialised form of touch.”
Glennie’s performances demonstrate that the body can perceive sound not only through the ears but through vibrations felt throughout the body.
Olav Skille
A pioneer in the development of modern vibroacoustic therapy.
“Low frequency sound can be experienced directly in the body as vibration.”
Skille’s research helped develop therapeutic systems where sound is delivered through specially designed tables or chairs so the body can feel the vibrations directly.
Lao Tzu
Founder of Taoist philosophy and author of the Tao Te Ching.
“Music in the soul can be heard by the universe.”
Ancient Taoist teachings often described harmony in nature as a balance of vibration and energy flowing through all living things.
Plato
Student of Socrates and one of the most influential philosophers in Western history.
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”
Plato believed that music had the power to shape human character and emotional balance.
Aristotle
Student of Plato and one of the founders of Western science and philosophy.
“Music has the power to form character.”
Aristotle observed that different types of music could influence mood, behaviour, and emotional states.
Hazrat Inayat Khan
A spiritual teacher who introduced Sufi philosophy to the West in the early 20th century.
“Sound is the medicine of the future.”
Khan taught that vibration and music could influence both emotional and physical states within the human body.
Paramahansa Yogananda
Founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship and author of Autobiography of a Yogi.
“Sound or vibration is the most powerful force in the universe.”
Yogananda described the universe itself as emerging from vibration — a concept found in several ancient traditions.
Sound and the Human Experience
From ancient philosophers to modern researchers and musicians, many people across history have recognised that vibration is a fundamental part of life.
Good Vibrations Vibroacoustic wellbeing sessions explore this principle by allowing people to experience sound not only with the ears, but with the entire body.
