Habitat Assessments and Species Expertise

Since 2005, over 25 habitat assessments have been conducted for a variety of species, including the Mabee's salamander, tiger salamander, canebrake rattlesnake, and small whorled pogonia in southeastern Virginia. These assessments are critical in determining whether a particular site offers suitable habitat for these species and in understanding the delicate balance of environmental conditions required for their survival.

Species Descriptions

Small Whorled Pogonia
The small whorled pogonia is a federally threatened native orchid found in just 19 counties in Virginia. This diminutive plant has very specific habitat requirements, including the presence of symbiotic fungi. Balancing these needs with the surrounding habitat conditions is essential for determining whether a site can support this plant species.

Mabee's Salamander
This elusive salamander is a specialist of longleaf pine habitats, which have significantly declined in Virginia. Habitat assessments for Mabee’s salamanders focus not only on potential breeding sites, such as fishless ponds, but also on the surrounding upland habitats where adults spend the majority of their time.

Canebrake Rattlesnake
A state-endangered subspecies of the timber rattlesnake, the canebrake rattlesnake is found in native cane thickets. After years of persecution and continued habitat loss, this species has faced significant population declines. Canebrake rattlesnakes require large areas of space, making habitat assessment particularly important in determining whether a site is suitable for their needs.

Barking Treefrog
The largest native treefrog in the U.S., the barking treefrog has a distinctive call resembling a barking dog. They breed in fishless ponds, and their calls make it possible to assess their presence or absence efficiently. Surveys for this species often include vocalization tracking from a distance, which aids in estimating population numbers.

What is a Habitat Assessment?

A habitat assessment is an evaluation of both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) features of a site to determine if it can support a particular species. It aims to answer whether the species could potentially live in the area and assesses the likelihood of their presence. This process is distinct from a full species survey, which involves an in-depth search for the species and often requires more intensive fieldwork.

A Comprehensive Evaluation

A habitat assessment report is a thorough, analytical evaluation similar to a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment. These reports are completed by wildlife biologists, ensuring a level of detail that goes beyond what typical wetland delineators provide. A comprehensive habitat assessment addresses all potential habitat components and is crucial for regulatory decision-making.

These reports typically include 15 pages of detailed narrative text, supplemented with an additional 15 pages of photos and maps. The in-depth nature of these reports minimizes delays, as regulatory agencies will not need to request additional information.

Unique Report Format

Technical reports can often be difficult to digest, but the format of these habitat assessments is designed for clarity and ease of understanding. The assessment of habitat components is divided into sections with clear, direct observations. Each section compares observations to scientific literature and personal experience with the species, using a simple "+" or "-" system to indicate whether a habitat component is positively or negatively associated with the species. This structure simplifies the review process for both clients and regulatory agencies.

Species Surveys

Surveys for species like the small whorled pogonia are often more straightforward than for animals, as they are conducted when the plant is above ground and flowering. These surveys must occur within specific time frames to ensure accurate results:

  • Northern Virginia: June 1 to July 20

  • Southern Virginia: May 25 to July 15

  • North Carolina: Mid-May to early July

If suitable habitat is identified outside of these survey periods, a habitat assessment will be necessary before proceeding with the survey.

About the Team

With over 20 years of experience in environmental consulting, the team specializes in habitat assessments, surveys, and environmental evaluations. From small commercial properties to large-scale projects like 1,200-acre solar farms and business parks, we have successfully conducted assessments across a wide range of environments. We also have experience with wetland delineations, permitting, environmental site assessments, water utility mapping, and environmental sampling.

In addition to environmental consulting, the team has extensive experience in GIS analysis, managing large datasets, and educating others about herpetology. Our commitment to native wildlife and habitat preservation is demonstrated through long-standing service to organizations like the Virginia Herpetological Society and by contributing to herpetology education through the Virginia Master Naturalist program.

Whether you are assessing a small property or a large development, our team provides detailed, scientifically-backed assessments that streamline the regulatory process and help protect valuable wildlife habitats.
