Frequently Asked Questions

Ear microsuction is a professional and safe method of earwax removal that uses a gentle suction device to clear earwax and debris from the ear canal without the use of water or irrigation.

It is important to remember that wax has a purpose and it is healthy.

The frequency of ear microsuction depends on individual needs. Some people may require it occasionally, while others with chronic wax buildup might need more regular sessions. Your practitioner can advise on the best schedule for you.

Anyone experiencing earwax buildup, hearing difficulties due to wax, or discomfort in the ear canal can benefit from ear microsuction. It is especially helpful for people who have sensitive ears or medical conditions that make irrigation unsuitable.

Ear microsuction is generally painless. Some people may feel a slight tickling or suction sensation, but the procedure is usually comfortable and quick.

Unfortunately, we are only trained to safely complete ear microsuction on Adults 18 and over. However, we are able to conduct a full ear health check (otoscopy) on children from the age of 6years.

Yes, ear microsuction is considered very safe when performed by trained professionals. It is a cleaner and less invasive method compared to irrigation, minimizing discomfort and avoiding the introduction of water into the ear.

A typical ear microsuction session takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount of wax and the condition of the ear. We would recommend blocking out up to 45 minutes just to be on the safe side, particularly if you are also hoping to have the hearing screening.

Unlike traditional ear irrigation, which uses water to flush out earwax, ear microsuction uses a suction device to remove wax gently, reducing the risk of irritation or infection and is suitable for people with certain ear conditions.

The Ear is the most sensitive part of the body, therefore only trained professionals shout be performing Otoscopy and Microsuction. Although risks are rare, they are a possibility. The 3 common risks to be aware of are:

1. There may be the need for a second appointment if we are unable to remove all of the wax at your first appointment

2. Hard and particularly 'old' wax can become adhered to the canal wall, therefore there is a small chance a slight nick/abrasion may occur. If this happens, I will let you know and give you after care advice and we will monitor it

3. This only applies to those with Tinnitus - the noise from the suction unit may make you more aware of the related symptoms. However, this should settle within a few days
