Jung was shocked. Why would a man who claimed to be a objective scientist demand a dogma? What was Freud so afraid of?

When Sigmund Freud uttered those famous words to Carl Jung in Vienna in 1910, he wasn't merely expressing a distaste for Tarot cards or séances. He was diagnosing a vulnerability in the human psyche that would, a quarter-century later, tear Europe apart.

Freud saw psychoanalysis not just as a treatment for neurosis, but as an Enlightenment project—a rational, scientific dam holding back the primordial, chaotic waters of human irrationality. To understand why he was so terrified of the "black tide of mud," and how that exact tide engulfed Germany, we have to look at the intersection of psychology, occultism, and the collapse of Weimar democracy.

The Clash: Rational Dam vs. Mythic Sea

In 1910, Carl Jung was captivated by myth, religion, and the hidden spiritual symbolic language of the unconscious. Freud, however, smelled danger.

Freud’s core insistence that all unconscious drives could be traced back to biological impulses—specifically sex (Eros) and later aggression/death (Thanatos)—was an deliberate anchor. Freud knew that if psychology abandoned concrete biological drives in favor of mystical "spiritual energies" or mythic archetypes, it would lose its scientific footing.

More dangerously, Freud recognized that the human mind has a deep, seductive longing to surrender to magic, bloodlines, and ancient myths. He called "occultism" a tide of mud because it muddied the clear waters of objective reality, inviting people to substitute rational thought with comfortable, intoxicating fantasies.

Jung wanted to swim in the unconscious ocean; Freud wanted to construct an iron dike around it.

The Mud Rises: How Germany Traded Reason for Myth

In the early 20th century, Germany was arguably the intellectual and scientific capital of the world. It was the land of Kant, Goethe, Einstein, and Planck, boasting world-class universities and unmatched industrial power.

• Yet beneath this hyper-rational surface lay a brewing counter-revolution against modernity itself. Following Germany’s traumatic defeat in World War I, the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles, and the economic devastation of hyperinflation, the rational Ego of the nation shattered.

  

When rational systems fail to provide security or meaning, humans regress. Germany turned away from Enlightenment reason and sank into the "black tide":

1. Ariosophy and Esoteric Societies

Long before Hitler took power, the Völkisch movement laid the mythic groundwork. Esoteric movements like Ariosophy—pioneered by figures like Guido von List and Lanz von Liebenfels—blended Helena Blavatsky’s Theosophy with Germanic paganism, ancient runes, and racial supremacy. The Thule Society, a secret occultist group founded in Munich, became the midwife of the Nazi Party. It treated race not as a biological reality, but as a mystical, divine essence.

2. SS Mysticism and Wewelsburg Castle

Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, was thoroughly steeped in occultism. He converted Wewelsburg Castle into a neo-pagan, Arthurian sanctuary for the SS leadership, complete with a sun-wheel (Black Sun) embedded in the marble floor and ritual chambers. Himmler sent expeditions to Tibet and Scandinavia searching for lost Aryan origins and ancient artifacts.

3. Blut und Boden (Blood and Soil)

Nazi propaganda, masterminded by figures like Walther Darré and Alfred Rosenberg (author of "The Myth of the Twentieth Century"), explicitly rejected "Jewish intellectuality" and "mechanized modern rationality." They preached a return to the mystical connection between German blood and German soil. Reason was portrayed as weak and corrupting; instinct, blood memory, and intuition were celebrated as pure.

The Psychological Mechanism: Why Freud Was Right

Why did a nation of engineers, philosophers, and scientists yield to this mythic nonsense? Freud's psychological framework explains the tragedy with chilling precision.

Regression and Ego Breakdown

When individuals experience extreme existential terror and economic dislocation, the rational Ego loses its ability to negotiate with reality. Society regresses to infantile defense mechanisms. Myth and occultism offer absolute, magical answers that logical reality cannot match.

Projection of the Ego Ideal

In Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921), Freud explained that when a crowd forms, individuals surrender their critical judgment (their Superego/Ego) and project it onto a single leader. Hitler became the externalized "Ego Ideal" for millions. Because he spoke not in logical policies but in apocalyptic, mythic, and emotional terms, he bypassed the rational brain entirely, tapping directly into the raw Id.

Unchaining Thanatos

Freud’s concept of Thanatos (the Death Drive) posits that human beings carry an unconscious desire to destroy, control, and ultimately return to an inorganic state. Civilization’s job is to sublimating this instinct into useful work. But when a society embraces a mythic worldview that divides humanity into "pure" gods and "subhuman" demons, Thanatos is unshackled. Murder is transformed from a crime into a sacred duty.

The Irony of Jung's "Wotan"

The ultimate validation of Freud’s fear came from Jung himself. In 1936, Jung published a famous essay titled Wotan. Looking at Nazi Germany, Jung admitted that the nation was no longer acting rationally—it had been possessed by an ancient, dormant archetype of the Germanic god of storm, frenzy, and war:

"We who were standing by sighed or shaken as we watched the shimmering, unstable surface of the German soul... Wotan the wanderer arose... He is a fundamental attribute of the German psyche."

While Jung viewed this as proof of his Collective Unconscious, it simultaneously proved Freud’s original warning: when you uncritically invite the archetypes, myths, and "black mud" of the unconscious into the socio-political arena, you do not get spiritual renewal. You get a storm of unbridled frenzy and destruction.

Freud understood that the line separating civilized reason from violent barbarism is paper-thin. His desperate plea to build a "bulwark against the black tide of mud" was not an overreaction—it was one of the most accurate geopolitical predictions of the 20th century.
