Camera Obscura

Maciej Markowicz’s work occupies a unique position in contemporary photography in between Ansel Adams and Edward Burtynsky: where Adams sought crystalline, timeless vistas of untouched nature, and Burtynsky maps vast industrial systems in epic scale, Markowicz turns the landscape itself into a durational event. His moving camera obscura does not freeze mountains or infrastructures as permanent monuments but records how light, weather, and motion flow through them over eight seconds, translating perception—not just terrain—into the true subject of the photograph.

The large colour negatives hover between photography, painting, sculpture, and performance.
Each image becomes a “time container,” holding a fragment of flowing reality in material form.
Markowicz's photographs are not the landscape, but the experience of time made visible.

Motiongraph #108 reimagines the Pavillon de Flore from mid‑river as a layered, time‑saturated vision. Three camera obscura negatives form a triptych that holds motion and stillness together. The work echoes 19th‑century views of Paris while speaking firmly from the present. Its bold scale and color make the passage of time almost physically tangible. Here, the river becomes both subject and metaphor for time’s continuous flow.

Artwork is  held in the public collection of the Musée Français de la Photographie in Bièvres, France.

Private Friday Collectors’ Studio Visit
