Here we blah blah blah...</em></p><p>In other words, a Pobby is an NPC in Pobby Life that crops up in multiple places, in a different colour, wearing different clothes, or just standing chatting. <p><em>Edited 05/04/2026.</em></p><p><em>Edited again 25/04/2026.</em></p><h3><strong>The things that inspired it</strong></h3><p>You think: 'I've learned a lot of Computer Science knowledge at school/college/work recently - maybe I should start making my own game, and impress my peers'.</p><h4><strong>The games that it all started with</strong></h4><p>Ever since I got a console in 2022 (a Nintendo Switch OLED, and <em>Minecraft</em> on it), I've wanted to make a game inspired by it. <em>Minecraft</em> and <em>Mario Kart 8 Deluxe</em> were two of the first console games I played, so they gave me some inspiration.</p><img src="https://cdn.soloist.ai/de7d1eed-effd-47fe-937b-9749c4cc98e1/65aa34d9-dfa9-4a9c-bd4e-62b81f50aaa0_2048x2048.webp" data-image-fit="fit"><h4><strong>Later on...</strong></h4><p>When I got a laptop (the first thing I had to do is set it up, obviously), the first thing I did was decide which engine I would use. <em>Unreal Engine</em> was my first choice, as it lets you publish games to any device for free. I read through some of the licensing terms, and knew it would cost me nothing at first.</p><p>After a few months, it just got too complicated and boring for me to use, along with the fact the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/en-us/unreal-engine/unreal-engine-5-7-documentation">Unreal Docs</a> are aimed at proffessional game developers, and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://chatgpt.com">ChatGPT</a> not really being very helpful at Blueprints, so I switched to another alternative: Unity. I started with it about 2 weeks ago after about 1.5 months of no game development. I decided to jump back in, and Unity has been the engine I needed.</p><p>Most of Unity is the same or similar to Unreal Engine, but the only complaint I have is the landscaping feature (called 'Terrain' in Unity) requires you to make a landscape thing, a terrain layer, and then apply that terrain layer. It's just a bit more hassle, but just a minor issue.</p><p>The image you see in the Pobby Life section of the <a target="" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="/games#introduction-1">Games</a> page (and below)? That's a very early screenshot of Pobby Life and will <em>definitely </em>change over time.</p><img src="https://cdn.soloist.ai/de7d1eed-effd-47fe-937b-9749c4cc98e1/08d3b63b-e661-42d2-802c-850bcf089f0e_2048x2048.webp" data-image-fit="fill"><h4>Starting with Unity</h4><p>When I started with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://unity.com">Unity</a> a couple of weeks ago, it feels so much more enjoyable to use, and easier as well, with full right-click menus (though they don't align with your Windows theme). <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://unrealengine.com">Unreal Engine</a>, on the other hand, had search bars for context menus, but they were too big and a lot of the time I had to scroll down on them to find what I wanted, and importing a 3D object was rather time consuming, along with the fact you need to find the object in the Content Browser, double-click it, then select under the Collision header, select 'Use complex collision from simple'. I thought 'I've never seen games like it really, so why shouldn't I make a game inspired by it?'. Obviously a full-scale clone would be pointless (and risky) so I'm planning to add a twist to it.
