In recent years, there has been a clear global shift within education as more and more schools are moving towards digital education. The modern classroom has moved away from traditional style teaching, which focused on paper assignments, textbooks, and in-person assessment. And has instead become more synchronous with technology. Learning Management systems like Canvas and Google Classroom have become the norm and are pushing for most, if not all, school work to be online.Many educators are now arguing t that this over-reliance on technology in the classroom has created a digital fatigue and has led to a cognitive decline amongst students as literacy rates and other academics are on a rapid decline.&nbsp;This website will explore my personal research on the over dependence of technology and cognitive decline amongst students and make a case for further professional research in this matter. By exploring the cognitive benefits of traditional teaching styles and face-to-face engagement, this research proposes an approach to balance technology in the classroom to reduce student burnout and restore deep, focused learning in an increasingly screen saturated world.

Revisiting a Traditional Classroom: A Research Proposal to Combat Digital Fatigue and Enhance Cognitive Engagement

My proposed solution involves a return to traditional teaching, which was centered on face-to-face interaction and engagement with digital activities. I am advocating for a return to "active learning." I believe an approach where we work towards building engagement and hands-on learning, as statistics show that active learning can increase engagement by up to 50% and significantly reduce failure rate compared to digital learning. By moving away from synchronous and online work, we can build an active culture in our classroom and restore social and cognitive foundations to improve overall student experience

Rediscovering Learning Without Screens

Recently, I completed 2 semesters' worth of student teaching as I pursue my degree in secondary education. And unfortunately, I am disappointed with the current state of education, as students are disconnected and are not able to engage with their education. Initially, I believed that it may just be due to age and “teenage angst”; however, over the course of those two semesters, it was clear that technology in the classroom was the issue. After 2 years of lockdown due to COVID, schools had to move towards online courses; however, since the lockdown ended, online courses have remained the norm. And while it's created convenience, I believe it's causing more issues then problem.My central research question was clear: “Is technology the reason for this generation's cognitive decline?” I believed this was the case, as throughout my experience in the classroom, students were blatantly proving it. As I saw constant cheating and a lack of effort, things like Photomath, ChatGPT, and Google AI essentially provided students with easy and quick answers, leaving no room for problem-solving skills or cognitive simulation.My hope with this proposal is to help educators reconsider how they integrate technology in the classroom. To find a solution to this overreliance and cognitive decline. As I am afraid of this younger generation lacking important skills they need for the real world,

Personal Connection

Over the years, there has been an estimated $30 billion investment in educational technology. However, based on my research and the evidence ive privided its clear that screens do not equal better learning standards or performance. And while tools like the SAMR model provide helpful outlines for technical integration in the classroom. It's hard for teachers to mitigate the risk that technology always creates, a risk of cognitive offloading and lower conceptual understanding.Which is why I believe that deeper research is necessary to establish a balanced nd purpsful integration of technology in the traditional classroom while still using active learning methods. I believe that through further research, we can prevent the cognitive decline amongst students as well as digital fatigue. If we move towards this balance, future educators like myself can foster a classroom environment in which we prioritize cognitive improvement and authentic student engagement/ passion.

This video demonstrates the clear cognitive decline among the youth due to digital devices. It acknowledges parental and medical concerns and highlights the clear cognitive issues that come with overuse of screen time, like issues with reading and problem-solving skills.

The Modern classroom is stuck in a "Cognitive Paradox," which is a phenomenon where digital tools that were meant to enhance out effenciency inadvertantly lead to the decline of fundamental skills. The more classrooms become synchronous with digital platforms, the more students develop the habit of using things like AI to complete basic educational tasks rather than relying on their own effort.This reliance on AI and technology as a whole is creating a significant problem, as research has proven that while students are efficient at finding answers, due to these tools. Their actual conceptual understanding of topics and their ability to actively recall what they learned are significantly declining by as much as 17%I propose to "Revisit traditional Teaching Styles" to address these issues by researching how integrating traditional low-tech elements can serve to combat digital fatigue and restore cognitive engagement in the classroom

AI and technology are significantly impacting students as studies have shown that student retention and critical thinking are starting to drop significantly. Many students are taking AI answers at face value accepting them as true without any further research or attempt to understand a concept. This is leading to a lack of complex problem solving skills. Its more common for students to cheat and find fast answer rather then truly understand a topic.These issues are highlighted in this article which breaks down the cognitive and social erosion that technology and AI have caused

Being Purposeful with Screen Time: Students' reliance on digital tools ultimately comes down to how much educators use tech in the classroom and how they use it. When integrating technology into the classroom its important that we evaluate how it will benefit the learning experience. There are topics like computer science, which is obviously computer-heavy. But traditional classroom activities like literacy and reading assignments, research, and math can all be done without a screen. This is why we must take time to evaluate our lessons and determine if it truly benefits students to have technology involved.The SAMR Model: This model is a framework designed to guide educators towards the purposeful integration of technology in education. This model categorizes technology into four levels: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition.
