Formerly known Robert Hall Parber, but officially known as Bob Weir, was born on October 16, 1947, in San Francisco California. He grew up in a home with his adopted parents, Mr. and Mrs. Weir. Thus, the name change. At the age of 16, Bob met Jerry Garcia, a 21-year-old guitar player who at the time was playing banjo music at Dana Morgan’s music store. By complete accident the pair formed an unlikely friendship. Which ultimately led to the creation of the Grateful Dead in 1965.The Grateful Dead was an American rock band, known for their electric style and the fusion of rock, bluegrass, jazz, and psychedelia. They are famous for improvision during their live performances and also considered “the pioneering godfathers of the jam band world” according to Rockin’ Out: Popular Music in the USA. Their unique sound and experimental approach to music quickly garnered a devote following know as Deadheads. As the Grateful Dead evolved, so did Bob Weir’s role in the band.In the early years of the band Bob Weir played rhythm guitar and sang a large portion of the lead vocals. Until the fall of 1968 when he was kicked out of the band, because his musical and lyrical development had decreased. During his leave of absence, he learned new techniques which led to his eventual return to the band later that year. When he returned, the band was pleased with his new playing style. An often-quoted Phil Lesh once said, “I found myself astonished, delighted and excited beyond measure at what Bobby was doing.” Over time Bob became more than just a rhythm guitarist; he developed his style into something unique. Not only that, but he also took on an even bigger role by becoming a notable singer and songwriterA few decades later, in 1995 Jerry Garcia passed away, and a couple of months after his death, the band disbanded. Bob continued playing, forming bands with past and present musicians. It wasn’t until 2018 that Bob formed a new band; Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros.It all started with a phone call to Don Was. In an interview in 2022, about the bands origin, Don Was recalls the conversation he had with Bod Weir. “I got a call from him, I guess probably four, five years ago. He said, “I had a dream [about late bassist Rob Wasserman].” Rob had introduced Bobby and I in the early ’90s. Bobby said, “In the dream, Wasserman said that he introduced us because you were supposed to take his place when he was gone. So, you want to play upright [bass] and start a trio with Jay?” I said, “Heck, yeah!” So he gave me some songs to work on. I practiced and went up [to Northern California] and, of course, he didn’t play any of the songs he told me to rehearse. But there was something there. I could tell, after about 20 minutes, that we felt the beat in the same place, and it was grooving, even though we hadn't played together before. And that was it. After about 20 minutes, he called his manager and said, “Book the band.” And we were off.”As mentioned in the conversation, the project began as a trio of Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, Don Was on double bass, and Jay Lane on drums. After a few concerts, the band gained popularity, prompting the addition of the Wolfpack, a horn and string section made up of five additional musicians. Over the course of several years Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros featuring the Wolfpack continued to tour and record. They reworked several Grateful Dead songs turning the original material into an array of colorful orchestral arrangements. This highlighted Bobs ongoing creativity and connection to the music he helped created decades earlier. The Start of Bob Weir and The Wolf Bros

Where it all began, my love for the Grateful Dead and my eventual finding of the legend Bob Weir. To set the stage, it was the summer of 2022, I was forced to retake a few classes due to my poor grades. One of those classes happened to be Mr. Higgins American History. It was one of those classes where you could tell the teacher did not take his job seriously, but in some regard, he did care a little. Surprisingly that was the only class that I actually cared for. Instead of focusing on traditional topics like the American revolution or the territorial expansion, we listened to our teachers’ stories on his experience through life.As of today, I couldn’t tell a friend the things that I heard from Mr. Higgins, but I do know they were interesting. Though there was one story that caught my attention; it was the first concert he ever went to. He made it sound like it was the best thing that ever happened to him, the energy, the dancing, and the unpredictable guitar jams. I’ll skip most of the details, but it was his attendance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on July 14, 1984, back when he was a young adult.I still remember what he told me that day, but what’s important is the album that he recommended that I should start with. Daves Picks Volume 30, a set of live recording from the Filmore East concert collection that was released on CD in 2019. Since then, I became an enormous fan, anything that is Grateful Dead related I am into. The live albums, bootleg cassette tapes, the memorabilia, and everything in between.Fast forward two years, I learned of an excellent opportunity to see Bobby Weir and The Wolf Bros in concert. It just happened that the teacher that introduced me to the Grateful Dead was the same person that mentioned this great opportunity. When I was preparing myself for this event, I stumbled upon Bob’s albums and became very interested in his work. Since then, my appreciation for Bob Weir has continued to grow, which has ultimately led to the creation of this portfolio.Going forward, this portfolio has been split into six sections; each may be accessed at the top of this fan page. It is assembled so that the reader may choose to follow the sections as it is laid out or may choose to read at their own discretion. Each section focuses on a different aspect of Bob’s career. It starts with the preface, and a history lesson, followed by a gatekeeping essay (Dead Head or Not), then a long form criticism that also acts as an album review (Live in Colorado Vol. 2), a concert review (Nov. 13 Cincinnati Music Hall concert), and finally an informational page about your author.My research for this portfolio came from a combination of documentaries, interviews, online research, and fan discussion. All of these diverse sources have given me a better understanding of Bob’s career. Which has helped me to create a portfolio that not only honors him, but reflects on his musical journey.

Since Bob Weir formed his collaboration with the Wolf Bros in 2018, they have played over two hundred concerts and created two albums over the course of seven years. In 2021 the band played at four locations across the state of Colorado. Of the four, two of these locations were recorded and made into two double record albums. The albums are known as the “Live in Colorado Collection.” &nbsp;&nbsp;“Live in Colorado Vol. 1” was recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on June 8-9 and “Live in Colorado Vol. 2” was recorded at Gerald R. Ford Amphitheatre in Vail, Colorado on June 11-12. These venues converted the natural surrounding area into an open-air amphitheater. This created a unique, but immersive atmosphere. The natural beauty surrounding the venue adds a stunning visual, which enriches the overall ambiance. Not only does nature elevate music, it also makes each performance feel more organic and memorable. The album “Live in Colorado Vol. 2” proved to tackle the connection between music and nature perfectly.Live in Colorado Vol. 2 is widely considered as a statement of artistic reinvention and a celebration of Bobs career as a song writer and musician. This album perfectly blends rock, country, folk, and psychedelic influences into a well-connected and appealing sound. With the release of Volume 2 the band wasn't just redefining themselves as a band, but their music too. Each track feels alive in its own way, but they are still tied together by an easy flow that feels completely unforced. Theres a looseness in the playing, the kind of energy one would get when one has played with one’s bandmates for many years. What makes this album so special isn't the music itself, but the way it captures Bob Weir on stage. He sounds fully alive on each track, leaning into them with a calm assurance that one would only get from decades of onstage experience.“Mama Tried” opens Live in Colorado Vol. 2 with an upbeat rendition of the typical country song. With Greg Leisz on a steel pedal guitar, it gives the Merle Haggard’s song a distinct ballad-like feel that pushes closer to the classic outlaw sound. Rather than the typical Grateful Dead psychedelic rock and roll music tune. This significantly changes the entire vibe of the entire album, creating an unusual, but interesting set song to start with.Bob Weir’s voice is different; it doesn’t sound like it did sixty years ago. It has a weathered down feel, which creates a perfect fit for the song. He sings about letting his mama down, rather than sounding like a borrowed song, he makes it sound like an actual memory from the past.The next song in the album is “Eyes of the world/what’s going on,” and this is where the band shows you what they are all about. They turn the typical bouncy Grateful Dead tempo of “Eyes of the world” and slow it down. Creating a more relaxed and focused version of the song. This extra space makes room for the addition of horns and strings. Turning the smooth tune into a jam, that not only allows for a great transition, but an array of perfectly layered sound.About halfway through, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” hits your ears. A classic that surprisingly fits well. The relaxed tempo makes the transition feel very natural, even though the songs come from two different distinct genres. Bob Weir has a unique take on vocals where he talks his way through the lyrics, while the band carries the emotional weight underneath. Before the song ends, they slide back into “Eyes of The World,” creating a masterpiece.“Terrapin Station Suite” is an amazing track, not just musically, but lyrically as well. At a little more than twenty minutes this track twists and turns through all the different sections of the suite. The arrangement of instruments helps keep the original structure of the song intact while at the same time changing the texture. With the addition of strings, horns and the pedal steel. It adds new layers that take the familiar piece and turn it into a truly cinematic classic. &nbsp;In this particular track you can hear that Bob Weir’s voice sounds a little rough around the edges. Typicaly this feature does not go well with most songs, but it actually fits this song perfectly. “Terrapin Station Suite” is all about risk, destiny, and the mysteries of life, so an older, weathered voice makes the story feel more believable. It ends up sounding like less nostalgia and more of classic tale being retold.Compared to the other tracks, “The Other One” feels different. Not lyrically or musically, but more like this song carries a special emotional weight for Bob Weir. For being Bob Weir’s first major contribution to the Grateful Dead catalog, it shares a significant moment in Bob’s life. With Weir’s slashing guitar, Don Was’s double bass groove, and Jay Lane’s sharp drumming, the band creates an energy like no other. The end result of “The Other One” feels both wild and controlled, like a glimpse into the primal days of the Grateful Dead with an older, yet more experienced lens.“Brokendown Palace” shows up on the back half of the album. The band plays this track slow and gentle, letting each chord ring in your ear before moving along. The arrangement is simple, but the strings, pedal steel and piano keys add a unique touch giving the track a special feeling. Nothing in this song feels overdone, it’s the laid-back approach that gives it character. This version feels like catching up with an old friend and slipping back into an old conversation. It also sets the mood for the next two songs that follow in the album.“Days Between” has to be the heaviest song in the entire album. Not because of the emotional weight, the loud drums, or the guitar attacks. It’s heavy because of how the band portrays the song; it is slow and patient, and the band forces you to listen to each chord, change in tempo and every verse. There is so much tension in this song that it comes from both the lyrics, and the Wolf Bros added strings and horns. By the time the song ends, it feels like the band shared a moment with the crowd.“Ripple” is the perfect closer; it feels like it should be a necessity in any Dead concert or album. This song has been a staple in the Grateful Dead’s catalog for many moons. It stays close to the original, but with the presence of the Wolf Bros and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, it feels different. The band keeps the song simple, with no grand exits or surprise shifts; it's just a warm melody that lets the message shine.The performance given in this album was absolutely amazing, from the first track till the very end. Bobby Weir and the Wolf Bros made each song feel familiar, but renewed proving that they can expand sound without it losing its core identity. Rather than overplaying or stretching their tunes too far, they kept the melodies restrained and didn’t overdo it. This kept the emotional weight of each song land more effectively. From the clear vocals from Bobby Weir, the audience in the background singing along, and the classic Grateful Dead style of improvision, they created an album that is perfect. An ideal, go-to favorite for Deadheads that love grooving in a dreamy yet fuzzy haze.&nbsp;

Grateful Dead co-founder Bobby Weir finally returns to Cincinnati after fifty-two years! He spent six decades touring, jamming out, and producing records with the Grateful Dead. He returns not under the Grateful Dead name, but as Bobby Weir and The Wolf Bros. A trio formed in 2018 with the one and only Bob Weir on vocal and guitar, Don Was on double bass and Jay Lane on drums.Naturally the event was hosted by the same organization that hosted them 50 years ago; The Cincinnati Music Hall. The venue if famously home to the Cincinnati Pop Orchestra, the “pop” counterpart is the Cincinnati Symphony, which performs lighter, crossover, and popular‑music programs. In a recent event, Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack partnered with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. To bring fans a concert like no other.Like most concerts of today, they cost money. Tickets were on sale from fifty to five-hundred dollars. A bit extreme, but then again there are certain individuals that are willing to spend thousands of dollars to see their favorite artist live. The venue itself contained three floors of available seating, and no matter where you sat you would still have an excellent view of the stage. The one thing that did set this event apart from others was the available VIP packages. If purchased the first fifteen rows would have access to a sound check before the show started, an invitation to the VIP lounge, and a premium merchandise gift. Which happened to be a portable JBL Clip 4 speaker with the insignia of a red lightning bolt, a unique gift that proves the dead will be forever imprinted in their music.The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra started the show with "A Grateful Overture." A song that was produced by an Italian composer that is not included on any Grateful Dead or Bob Weir album. It is a blend of various songs sung by the Grateful Dead as well as some classical elements which makes this song the perfect introduction for the night. The creator of the song Giancarlo Aquilanti once said, “It sets the audience to the right mood.”As I prepared myself for what would be an extradentary night, I wondered about two things how would elements of rock and orchestral roots mix together and would the set list reflect top songs from the Dead’s collection. Well, I quickly realized that the setlist was full of songs that represented Bob Weir, Grateful Dead’s growth as a band, and in typical fashion improvision throughout.As the trio entered the stage the audience immediately gave a standing ovation for a solid minute. It truly goes to show that an artist with fifty plus years of experience still has the respect and gratitude of his fans. As they settled in, they began with the iconic “Jack Straw,“ which was first included on the Europe 72’ album. A tune written by Bob Weir and Robert Hunter, it was with this song the theme of the night was set.In the last minutes of the first set, they ended with "Truckin'." Probably one of the most well-known tunes in the Grateful Dead collection. The crowd erupted in cheers as the familiar opening chords filled the air. In unison everyone began singing. Their voices were blending with the band’s performance. Fans gathered at the front of the stage swaying to the music. It was like a true Grateful Dead concert.My favorite moment came following the end of intermission, when the band preformed an unusual version of “Shakedown Street.” They reprised the typical groovy bass line and turned it into a jaw dropping sound, that cannot be explained unless you were there. Since the first time I listened to this song, I absolutely loved it. I still remember the day I found a bootleg Dead tape at a record store, that was my first live listen. This song will forever be engrained in me.This couldn’t be a Bob Weir concert without his first song written for the Dead; “The Other One.” This song held a special place in the Dead's archive, capturing Bob's place in the band. A staple song known for its unpredictable live performances, it truly showcased the unique style that Bob brought to the night.The band finished off set two with the melody of “Dark Star,” a reprise of “Uncle Johns Band,” which turned into a reprise of “Playing in the Band.” A notable set of songs to perfectly end a remarkable night.Overall, the concert was an amazing experience. The combination of traditional folk elements and orchestral instrumentation created a unique and immersive sound. The fusion of these groups showcased versatility and what happens when music is elevated to new heights. This will forever be a concert that I will hold close to my heart.

November 13 The Cincinnati Music Hall

Originally born in Traverse City, Michigan, moved to Troy, Ohio. In the small town of Troy, he received a K-12 catholic education. While growing up in this small town, he received a Catholic education. During a high school history lesson, he was first introduced to the Grateful Dead. Ever since his first live listen to "Cosmic Charlie" from the 1970 Fillmore East concert collection, he has become an enormous fan.After graduating from high school in 2024, he yearned to move away and experience the big city feeling once again. Unfortunately, he was not able to move back to Michigan, but instead moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. He currently attends the University of Cincinnati, where he is majoring in mechanical engineering. Since attending, he has joined Greek Life, a fraternity known as Triangle. There, he learned to embrace who he is, create meaningful connections, and make lasting memories. One of his life goals is to collect all twenty-two live/studio Grateful Dead albums. So far, he only has six. He still has a long way to go but will remain a Deadhead for life.

The definitive definition of what a Deadhead is questionable. From the hardcore fans to the casual listener, both groups have their own definition. A hardcore fan might say that a person must have been alive to physically travel with the Grateful Dead, see the live performances, and even tape some of their concerts. Be surrounded by the culture and counterculture, have been affected by the electric Kool-Aid acid test. While on the other hand a casual listener may say that as long as a person likes their music then they are considered a Deadhead. These are all points that must be considered for a person to be known as a Deadhead. However, these are just basic definitions. The real question is what does it actually mean to be an actual deadhead?To start, we are going to look at the beginning of the Grateful Dead and their involvement with both culture and counterculture. They did not begin as any old rock and roll band; they grew from a rich fan-built culture around sharing similar ideas of community acceptance. As Deadheads, they followed the Dead’s live tours from city to city, recording and trading bootleg cassette tapes, sharing food and equipment in parking lots, and creating a space where they could experience improvision and spiritual enlightenment firsthand. This gave people a feeling of belonging, even if they had never seen each other before. Fans dressed in tie-dyed shirts, carrying blankets and instruments, and talking to each other about the previous night’s setlist. The Grateful Dead’s music became the soundtrack for this lifestyle, not just a playlist to listen every once in a while.This culture did not appear out of nowhere; it grew out of the mid-1960s counterculture centered in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. There the band rejected the mainstream norms, embraced psychedelics, and pushed for a more experimental sound. Causing the movement to question authority and become the wild yet eye catching counterculture energy that fans embraced. The Grateful Dead helped turn this wild group of hippies into a lasting fan culture that still exists today. The typical concert turned into collective experiences, where the audience and band blurred into one shared space. The acid tests and the psychedelic parties showed that the music could become much more than what was already upon them.Beyond the Grateful Dead itself, when side projects were a turn of a century idea. Each member created a band that kept the same spirit and energy alive in different ways. Bob Weir carried much of the Grateful Dead’s sound into many of his side projects such as RatDog. Jerry Garcia toured for years with the Jerry Garcia Band, using techniques that turned the typical groovy rhythm into a more intimate sound. Even the other members (Phil Lesh and Micky Hart) of the band created side projects. Such as Phil Lesh and Friends, The Other ones, and Furthur, they not only extended the legacy of the Grateful Dead, but allowed for new audiences and younger fans to experience what older fans experienced with the Grateful Dead. For many these side projects act as the entrance into the larger Dead world.Although these side projects are great, as they allow for more audience, it also creates some fuss, turning full Deadheads into gatekeepers. In this instance a gatekeeper is someone who polices the idea of a true Deadhead, by policing who counts. Often by creating challenges for new fans, insisting that the old way was the true way, and that attendance to live performances and loyalty to the original is the only true Deadhead. This mindset can often make the community more exclusive as if loving the music isn’t enough. Gatekeepers may even look down on younger fans that discovered the Grateful Dead through side projects like Dead and Company or Bob Weir’s RatDog.In my personal opinion, I believe that for someone to be considered a real Deadhead they have to enjoy the music. A true Deadhead doesn’t just enjoy the song, they enjoy the improvisation, the long jams, the different feeling from each show, and the energy of the crowd. A person should feel excited to follow the setlists, listen to old tapes or records, and talk about the shows to other fans. The core identity of being a Deadhead is loving the music and the experiences, not just one member or one project in isolation.When I was searching for what a Deadhead was through fan discussion I found the perfect definition from a user on Reddit’s forum, and I would like to share it with you.&nbsp;If you listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock your soul, you are in fact a deadhead.If you like the music of the Grateful Dead, you are in fact a dead headIf you don’t really know who they are, but you enjoy the music, you guessed it, I’d call you a deadhead.If you self identify as a deadhead, I’ll believe it because why would you lie?
