Marron Valley and Its Mystical Pull
"Marron Valley... is more than a name — it is a 'condition of the mind'" — The Herald, December 1, 1932.
This information excerpted from Okanagan History, 76th Report, Okanagan Historical Society, 2012. Orignial article By Suzanne Schmiddem and Randy Manuel
A Hidden Canyon
Four kilometres west of Highway 97 and 3A lies a hidden canyon carrying the peaceful, 11-kilometre Marron River. Further west, Marron Lake appears below the road, ringed by Ponderosa pines and grassy hilltops. The drive into Mountain Springs Nature Retreat marks the entrance to two historically rich lots in the valley.
The Indigenous, Syilx Nation have known this land for generations. Young men once trained here for their vision quest, running the canyon and ridge before a multi-day journey to Kamloops for tobacco. The river's name may trace to the "River of Wild Horses."
The canyon road, improved between 1909 and 1912 for the Kaleden irrigation system, once carried horse-drawn wagons, stages, and Greyhound buses. From 1909 to 1963, the Marron River supplied irrigation water to Kaleden.
The valley's post office build in 1901 in the upper lot. A government relief camp briefly operated there in the early 1930s. Burson, a solitary trapper, settled the lower lot in 1917 and lived there till 1946. Jackson's family later combined both lots, running a working ranch and forging a close friendship with neighbour the Armstrong. The property renamed Bear Claw Ranch in 1959. The old post office cabin got burned down in 1976–77.
In 1991, Jmaeff's family purchased the land, establishing a certified organic farm and naming it Mountain Springs Nature Retreat. Since 2005 Phyllis has welcomed visitors for nature walks, added a bed and breakfast in 2009.
Marron Valley's mystical pull continues to draw people in, just as it has for generations before.

Suzanne and Randy researched and created a historical interpretive board in 2010 for Phyllis Jmaeff, owner of Mountain Springs Nature Retreat in Marron Valley.
